Product description
Wes Anderson conjures a dystopian future Japan in magical stop-motion. After a canine virus outbreak, the dogs of Megasaki are exiled to a vast island garbage dump. When Atari (the daring twelve-year-old ward of the city’s mayor) sets out to rescue his beloved Spots, he meets a pack of mongrel friends and is launched on an epic quest. Innovatively blending English and Japanese dialogue through a cross-cultural voice cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Greta Gerwig, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, Yoko Ono, and Koyu Rankin, this fable of loyalty and disobedience combines Anderson’s signature themes—friendship among outsiders, the adventure of rebellion—with a delight in the boundless possibilities of animated storytelling. - Reviewed in Canada on December 18, 2020Verified PurchaseThis is an amazing movie that really touches the heart. If you adore dogs or cats, give it a watch. I am 76 and loved the movie as much as my 8 and 10 year old grand daughters. For the old and young. The graphics and videography are some of the best I have seen. I have rewatched it several times. My favorite scene is the dogs walking in a line in silhouette. Just a joyful movie.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 26, 2019Verified PurchaseQuirky and fumny in a way that only a Wes Anderson movie can be, Isle of Dogs tells a unique tale about a group of outcast dogs on Trash Island who struggle with issues of homelessness, isolation and abandonment. The voice cast is superb; particularly Bryan Cranston as Chief- a street dog who may not always have been a street dog. This is a true opus of love towards man's four legged friends.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 6, 2023Verified PurchaseFive stars on all fronts : story, direction, craftmanship, capturing perfectly dog behaviour. Plus really interesting bonus material.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 4, 2018Verified PurchaseIf you love Wes Anderson you must add this to your collection. He seems to be aging like a fine wine, adding depth and heart as he goes on. Wonderful characters and played to perfection by wonderful actors. A real feeling for the appeal and nature of dogs.
My only regret is that he seems to be an ailurophobe. I love both dogs and cats. He seems not to.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 3, 2018Verified PurchaseExcellent movie. Good plot, excellent themes. The fact that the voices are North American while the characters are Japanese is not an issue - 90% of the characters are DOGS. The thing people should be concerned about is the idea of the Great White Hero who sees the problem and fixes it while the visible minority characters can’t see the issue.
The picture is flawless Blu-ray quality and the sound is crystal clear. Worth watching if you’re in the mood for a creative morality fable.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 14, 2020Verified PurchaseThis is the second Stop Motion Animation film that Wes Anderson has made, and I have to say Isle of Dogs is absolutely Fabulous Stop Motion. It's amazing how far Anderson took this technology and pushed all the animators and puppeteers to the limit to produce this work of art. Naturally, many of the usual all star Wes Anderson actors provide the Voice work for the dogs and characters including Bill Murray, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban, Jeff Goldblum, Francis McDormund, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, F.Murray Abraham, Tilda Swinton, Liev Shreiber, Roman Coppola, Anjellica Houston, kara Hayward, and even Yoko Ono. Highly Recommeded.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Dog Lovers And Others
Verified Purchase"Isle of Dogs" is a masterpiece of modern stop-motion animation. It's not exactly kid-friendly but it does have a childlike air to it. much of the animation is reminiscent of classics like "Davey & Goliath" in some respects. However, it has more in common with Leika's modern classics such as "Coraline", "Para Norman" and "The Box Trolls".
The plot centers around a boy looking for his lost dog. The fictional city of Megasaki is ruled by cat-lovers who have found a way to banish all dogs to the spoiled Trash Island. This is a story of rebellion against tyranny and inhumane practice. The story is mostly told through the eyes of five dogs who befriend the boy and help him in his search.
I don't want to say more as that would spoil the fun. This film is edgy and might actually be a tear-jerker for dog-lovers - but not in a bad way. The story is gripping and can be enjoyed by anyone over the age of 12 (this is not a hard number by any means). I think if I had to pick a favorite dog from the film it would be Oracle. She's a pug who is revered because she has visions (which actually turns out to be that she watches television). Oracle is partnered with a Black Lab named Jupiter. I knew a real Black Lab named Jupiter from my childhood and I have fond memories of him.
This is a film of our time and it's definitely worth seeing and owning.
