Product description
Based on the Margaret Atwood’s award-winning, best-selling novel, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentals in its militarized “return to traditional values.” As on of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, belonging to the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – with one goal: to survive and find the daughter who was taken from her. Also featuring Yvonne Strahovski and Samira Wiles.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 20, 2018Verified PurchaseI've never liked Margaret Atwood as a writer. However, I was curious about this series. It's slow but really really good. You need to read about the Handmaid's world on the web first and once you're situated you can follow easily. What a world MA has created! Scary when people's rights are violated. I can't wait for season 2 now. And of course, the actress that plays Offred is amazingly good.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 6, 2018Verified PurchaseI read the book in university and it scared me then, with Atwood's twist on the dystopian future. But given the state of the world now it's even scarier. I am now ready for the second season! Elizabeth Moss is wonderful in the role and it's cool to see Atwood in cameos.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2021Verified PurchaseThis is an excellent series. 4 stars because I found some of the changed elements to be uncharacteristic of what I’ve seen to be true of American values.
I think the eugenics that played out in the books couldn’t be obliterated, although it would be nice to imagine something could get rid of the race divisions in America, in the novel the fear of a loss of race purity intensified because of the inability to have children. I think the need to have babies that looked like the men in power would become all the more important. Dysphoria of having children of another race would be profound
It was nice to see a lack of race division and interesting to think that this was what would make Americans lose their interest in shades of skin and hair textures/colours... I unfortunately found the book more believable on this account
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story and the actors very much. The characters came to life very well and most of ghilead is something that is frighteningly real and close at hand.
Canada’s role is amusingly the same, while it’s unclear how Canada has changed in its scope with the greater world, it’s clear how canada stays the same despite how eccentric and far right Americans decide to wander.
Elizabeth Moss is a good actress in the role of handmaiden. I think she’s brave to go without any makeup or other modern beauty products and the other actresses as well! I have a lot of respect for an actress (of any age) brave enough to go on screen with high definition cameras and no makeup! Bravo 👏
I’ve read some criticism of her appearance, but she’s absolutely gorgeous when she’s done up and she’s accepted a role of humility, a difficult and degrading role. Again, I applaud her bravery.
It’s good story telling even with the differences from the book but it’s a profoundly Canadian story the longer it goes. The longer it goes, the more it allows people to delve into the effects of trauma rather than the drama and adrenaline of the moment.
It’s a show that reminds us that there are mental and physical consequences to trauma, not an often exciting thing, but a relatable thing. It’s something I wished more people were strong enough to talk about.
Strength and bravery are the traits I would classify this show the most with. The directing has many striking shots with the red and white handsmaids positioned like a living, moving quilt. It has great and stark Beauty as well.
