    Virgil Tibbs earned respect as he was clearly the "number one homicide detective"!

    I have loved this movie for over 50 years. I had it on DVD and Blu Ray. Now, I purchased the Criterion Collection of In The Heat of the Night. It was worth the extra money (as most of the Criterion Collection is) and I am not sorry one bit for buying it. It feels like watching the movie for the first time. Can't get over how great the picture quality is, considering the movie is 52 years old. Looks like it was filmed recently. Overall, very pleased with my purchase.

    This most quotable line from an excellent film, In The Heat of the Night stars Sidney Potier, and Rod Steiger, with an assist to Lee Grant, and Warren Oates.
    Perhaps the most disturbing scene (for its time, the very turbulent '60s) is between Sidney Potier and Larry Gates. It certainly drew a reaction from audiences. A black man has the audacity to slap a white man.
    A well deserved slap by the way.

    The extras on the disc add to the enjoyment of owning this title.
