It's expensive, bigger and bulkier than your standard USB-C to 3.5mm but it sounds better and the ability to keep use of the USB-C port is good.

When used with a Hero 5 the noise level when plugged directly into the GoPro is on par to my Zoom H1 external recorder. When I used the same mic plugged directly into a Hero 4 using GoPros official adapter the noise floor was too high and I was forced to keep using my external recorder.

I feel that with this adapter I don't need to use an external recorder to get the best audio.

I was about ready to absolutely trash this device in a review, and then return it. After spending forty bucks, I was really disappointed. It didn't work at all. But then I thought I'd be fair, and try a different approach.

If you plug this GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter into the camera along with, say, a lapel mic, and then turn on the camera to start recording, it won't work. Not at all. It's not that it will record poppy, scratchy, bad, or poor quality sound. It won't record sound at ALL.

However, if you power up the camera, then plug the adapter and mic in, it WILL record high-quality sound (assuming that you've got, say, a high-quality lapel mic). Garbage in = garbage out (so invest in a good mic). But don't blame the adapter. I tested this device not only with the new GoPro HERO (2018) but also the GoPro HERO5 Session. It worked with both cameras. However, it would appear that the cameras need to recognize the adapter and then the insertion of a 3.5mm mic or other input before it will allow recording with an external device.

I do have one complaint though, and that's the reason for the 4/5 star rating. This thing is overpriced. You know it, I know it, and GoPro knows it. They could have built a mic jack into the camera, or sell this adapter for five bucks. They are gouging us, but they know they can because no one else makes a reliable and working GoPro mic adapter.

Still, I'm keeping mine. The internal GoPro mics are horrible, and this gives me crystal-clear audio using a lapel mic.

GoPro USB Mic Adapter

This item had been out of stock everywhere for so long that I wondered if it would ever be available again. Lots of 3rd-party gougers trying to get double MSRP or more due to this, but I didn't need one that badly... Got it preordered in July 2020 for CAD 69.99 (it's now increased by a few dollars).

All testing was done with a GoPro 6 Black. If you��re using a different model, your mileage may vary.

After you connect this unit to your GoPro, you'll have a new option to select in preferences / IO - Audio Input. This is where where you set the audio input type - options are standard mic, standard mic+ (gain boost), powered mic, powered mic+ (gain boost), line input. There is no way to check the recording levels, no metering of any kind. You have to try a gain setting to use, hope you didn��t overload the input, and adjust audio levels later. Best to start with standard levels, do a test recording, and only use the ��+�� setting if you��re certain that you need the additional gain.

Note: microphones that use "plug-in power" such as the Rode VideoMic Go should be set to "standard mic" or "standard mic +��, not powered mic.

When I first connected the unit and tried recording a video with an external mic, I got a lot of distortion on the recording, not sure exactly why. After pulling the battery and resetting everything, it worked ok, with some caveats.

Line input worked great for the higher input levels that you would get from an external sound mixing device. Line input is unbalanced -10 dBV. For connection to pro audio devices that have balanced +4 dBu outputs, I use an Ebtech Line Level Shifter to do correct balanced to unbalanced line level matching. You could probably get by with a balanced to unbalanced adapter cable, just make sure you aren��t overloading the mic adapter��s input with levels that are too ��hot��.

The mic adapter is a very unwieldy thing to have hanging off your GoPro. I picked up a Ulanzi V2 Pro Vlog Set, which has a horizontal space below the GoPro to hold the mic adapter. Immediately lots of clicks on the audio recording. Pulled the adapter from the cage so that it was hanging off the GoPro, rather than directly under the battery door, and there was no clicking. I infer that there��s EM/RF interference induced by the GoPro, assuming inadequate shielding. Taped some copper foil in a couple spots and the clicks went away. Perhaps a metal case rather than a plastic one would provide some shielding. Keep your phone/other electronic devices away from the GoPro when you're in record mode.

I've seen some speculation that having wi-fi enabled, or charging the GoPro while using it, may cause issues. I have my GoPro connected to a high capacity external battery pack via the mic adapter��s USB-C port, with wi-fi enabled, and it all appears to work fine. Since I put some shielding in a couple of places, no RF interference or other audio issues that I could hear. Long recording sessions could cause the GoPro to overheat, of course, I haven't tried recording for an hour to see what happens.

I've had some solid lock-up crashes (remove battery is the only solution) when trying to record with an external battery pack connected. People with GP7s also complain about the same issues. May be the type of USB cable, more troubleshooting required. For now I remove the external power connection before recording.

Overall, due to the numerous issues I encountered, this is NOT a unit I would recommend unless you absolutely must have a microphone connected to your GoPro.
