I am not an artist, but these make low-skill efforts look wonderful and using them is so much more pleasurable that they are worth every penny. Artist-grade materials perform better, and a lot of beginner struggles with learning new techniques can be avoided or improved when the materials themselves perform better. Sometimes the disappointing result is not due to the person’s attempt, it’s a result of the tools’ performance quality. A great artist can make beautiful art with student-grade materials; but all others can benefit and acquire new skill faster if using better quality materials from the start.

I already had a smaller set, so I was familiar with Polychromos, and already knew I prefer their oil-base and their quality of being wood bonded, over the more common wax-based pencil crayons. I find these blend nicely without the need for a blending agent or stump, and I love their ability to layer.

The package arrived in perfect, new condition, no damage.

I understand that the wood display box version is great for having all 120 colour pencils at sight and easy access; but I didn’t splurge for the “piece of furniture” and went instead with this more compact tin. I don’t have a permanent desk or a suitable storage area for the wood case set. The three layers in the tin are great — they have handles for easy removal and the trays themselves are molded to hold each pencil in place, so if you remove one the others don’t slide together in the space created by removing one, as happens in my smaller tin set. If you have one of the smaller tin sets, there is colour duplication with this 120 set; but I find it well worth it to get the 120! Had I not been so frugal I should have just bought this tin to begin with; but I will use the duplicates.

Highly recommend.

I had a smaller tin of Faber Castells and decided to purchase the 120 colours so I could have a better range. When I opened the tin (which came plastic sealed from factory) and several of the coloured pencils were broken. Not only that -- I took all the trays carefully from the box, and most of the missing pieces were not even in the box (I only found two bits), so I believe these pencils are being packed broken, to varying degrees -- cracked, missing points, or missing tips. I have never seen this on the smaller tins we buy at the art store. It was a little disappointing to get this beautiful box with so many broken pencils, particularly since this did not seem to happen during transit.

Die Stifte waren gut verpackt und kamen unbeschädigt an. Die Farbauswahl ist toll und meine ersten Versuche damit zu malen sind gut gelungen. Die Stifte geben schon bei ganz leichtem Druck viel Farbe ab und das Bild glänzt im Licht. Die Farben lassen sich in dünnen Schichten gut auf dem Papier ineinander verblenden.
Die am meist genutzten Farben sind auch schon ein ganzes Stück kürzer, aber die Stifte lassen sich auch einzeln nachkaufen.

The best set with unparalleled quality in terms of blending, ease of use and smoothness. The detailing with them is off the charts. They may seem expensive, but they are the best and will surely provide an experience that can only be achieved with these pencils. The colours are very beautiful and they create such jaw droppingly beautiful drawings that can only be achieved through these pencils even on cheap quality paper.

To tell you the truth, even on pathetic quality paper you will get better results from polychromos pencils than most other brands can give on 200 gsm quality paper. And you also need way too less layers with these than from any other brand. Even if these colours are somewhat translucent, the amount of layers needed are almost half or even less than half.
