The practical strategies helped me better understand and manage my emotions, which in turn improved how I dealt with stress and led my team. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to gain better control over their emotions and relationships!
- Reviewed in Canada on December 17, 2024Verified PurchaseGreat book, definitely works a read.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 5, 2020Verified PurchaseI live with PTSD and have always had trouble getting along with people. I've gone through intensive thereapy but never completely cracked my problem. I had no idea what was wrong. THEN I read "A New Earth" which got me to thinking about my communication style. When this book came along I started reading about Emotional Intelligence and realized my disfunction was centred on how to properly communicate and understand. This book changed my loife. I'm not just saying that. I went froma shut-in to someone who now regularly socializes and has a large group of friends. Life has gotten so much better that I don't have enough words to describe. Honestly, skip to the 4th Chapter. The first three are case studies/examples. They made waaaaay more sense to me AFTER I read the rest of the book.
My EQ went from 63 to 88. I'm content with that score. It is nice to have a quantifiable way to demonstrate the changes achieved from this book.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 10, 2017Verified PurchaseAlthough I have read more books on EI than I know what to do with, this book had the most useful and amount of material I could try and apply and share with others. I have enough ideas and exercises and food for thought to last until someone decided EI is no longer relevant, NOT and LOL. Great buy and you must read it yet also, you musty apply what you read and learn. If you don't, just give up, you are a lost cause, kidding. We all have hope.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 10, 2019Verified PurchaseRead it twice
- Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2024Verified PurchaseWork requirement
- Reviewed in Canada on April 4, 2013Verified PurchaseI bought this for an Emotional Intelligence course I was taking at work, and we were only really required to take the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal that comes free with the purchase of the book.
It's fairly quick to get through (255 pages with a fairly large font, and small physical size), and the information is presented in a conversational style.
I didn't love that quotes were pulled directly off the page and put into a box right beside the original sentence - it would make more sense to summarize content in these callouts, but, knowing that I could just ignore them meant the flow of my reading wasn't interupted.
There are some decent tips throughout, but the best thing for me was the reminder to keep many of my innate feelings of emotional intelligence on 'top-of-mind'. (It's so easy to get stressed, anxious and then emotially hijacked.)
If you've never done an EI/EQ test, it's worth buying the book for that (so I wouldn't buy this used because the unique code can't be used again) - it's a decent, general insight into your personal and social competencies with suggestions for what you can work on.
So for a quick primer on EI, this isn't that bad a read.
However, if you're looking for a more detailed examination of EI, I would suggest looking elsewhere (such as Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence book - probably one of the best on the topic).
