Product Description
Barbra Streisand
鶹.ca
Even in the face of epochal success, it's tempting to ponder what Barbra Streisand might have accomplished had she not spread herself across so many diverse entertainment media; so much ambition, so little time. This collection of 19 Streisand duets chronicles collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland at one end of the scale and Don Johnson at the other. It finds the singer dabbling--if, as her bluesy miscue with Ray Charles on "Crying Time" argues, not necessarily triumphing--in styles she largely eschewed elsewhere in her career. Still, her unlikely collaborations with Barry Gibb ("Guilty," "What Kind of Fool") and Donna Summer ("No More Tears (Enough Is Enough") during the disco era scored her some of the biggest successes of her career, ample proof that with the right chemistry, Streisand could be as powerful a pop music chameleon as she was a diva. New recordings with veteran Barry Manilow (the warm, low-key "I Won't Be the One to Let You Go") and Josh Groban (David Foster's overwrought "All I Know of Love") supplement recordings that stretch from the '60s kitsch-a-go-go of Harold Arlen's "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" across five decades of Streisand's unparalleled career. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Career-Spanning Collection of Stellar Duets Proves Streisand's Best Partner Is...Herself
Verified PurchaseI was fortunate enough to see Barbra Streisand in concert last night in San Jose's HP Pavilion, a truly once-in-a-lifetime occasion for an unabashed fan. En route to whet my appetite, I listened to this career-spanning compendium of nineteen stellar duets she performed. Ever the chameleon when it comes to breaking down musical genres and styles, Streisand makes not only her vocal versatility evident but her amazing consistency in the nearly four decades that separate the earliest track, the classic 1963 duet with Judy Garland on "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again" to the two songs she recorded specifically for this disc in 2002 (her fortieth anniversary with Columbia Records). They appropriately open and close the disc - the opener is a swooning, gushy ballad with fellow crooner Barry Manilow ("I Won't Be the One to Let Go"), and the closer is a more stentorian operatic dirge with forty-years younger lyric baritone Josh Groban singing in Italian ("You're All I Know of Love").
In between is quite a musical hodgepodge that Streisand's expert vocalism somehow pulls together. She fluidly moves from the swinging, watusi-driven treatment of Harold Arlen's "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" (yes, from "The Wizard of Oz"), a rarely heard 1966 novelty with the composer himself, to circling around Kris Kristofferson's whiskey-soaked bellow on "Lost Inside of You" from "A Star Is Born" to maneuvering the stuck-in-the-eighties bombast of "Make No Mistake, He's Mine" with scratchy-voiced Kim Carnes to taking the high road on the diva battle royale with an overly competitive Celine Dion on the melodramatic "Tell Him". Perhaps too familiar, several of the tracks have already been accepted into the 20th century American pop pantheon: the two Barry Gibb duets from her pop blitzkrieg of Bee Gees melisma, "Guilty"; the self-pity marital anthem, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with fellow Erasmus Hall classmate Neil Diamond; the ornate theatricality of "Music of the Night" with the original Phantom, Michael Crawford; and the torch-passing currents of poignancy and urgency with the Garland duet.
Sure, a couple of tracks border on kitsch now, though they remain infectious - the scorn-ridden disco inferno of "Enough Is Enough" with Donna Summer and the bill-and-cooing with former lover Don Johnson on the über-romantic "Till I Loved You". And a few have actually improved over time - "I Finally Found Someone", which pairs her surprisingly well with pop-rocker Bryan Adams, and the summit meeting with fellow icon Frank Sinatra in his obvious twilight on "I've Got a Crush on You". However, the best duet is the one she does with herself on the resplendent Burt Bacharach/Hal David medley of "One Less Bell to Answer" and "A House Is Not a Home", an inarguable pop masterpiece providing the perfect mix of arrangement, orchestration and overdub tracks with the songstress at her most sublime. It does seem ironic that Streisand's best partner is herself but at the same time, quite fitting.
