    For small rotary tools, Dremel is the Cadillac and this is the top of their line. I already had a 4000, which is almost the same, but corded, but I needed the added portability. Under normal loads, the 8240 feels just as powerful as its corded sibling.

    One complaint is that the cloth case isn't as sturdy or practical as the plastic case that came with the 4000 and the 8240 is thicker than the 4000, so I can't just carry it in the 4000 case. That isn't serious enough for me to deduct a star.

    A more important complaint is that not all of the attachments for the corded Dremel fit on the cordless Dremel. The flexible shaft and the mini circular saw, for example, fit the corded model, but the connector is too small to fit the cordless Dremel's shaft. I'm guessing that this is because using these attachments would add resistance that would drain the battery faster, or possibly exceed the available power. I deducted one star for this lack of versatility. If you need to use such attachments, go for a corded model, like the Dremel 4000.

    The added girth may be uncomfortable for some people. If you have small hands, this tool may feel too big for you. There are smaller, but weaker models available. I prefer to have the extra power and larger battery, even if the tool is chunkier.

    So, for me, it's a great addition to my corded Dremel 4000, and it's very useful for some types of work or when a power cord just isn't practical. But it doesn't entirely replace the corded model, as I would have hoped. There are still things that the corded model can do that this one can't.

    This is my second Dremel, the first being a hundred years old :-} and corded. This one has WAY more power. The new EZ-Lock cutting wheels and mandrels are superior to the old mandrel mounted ones -- cut maybe five times faster. Really. This battery-operated tool is significantly bigger than my old corded one, so is a little more awkward to use, but I can get used to that. LOVE the power, LOVE not having a cord. The nose piece just below the collet unscrews and becomes a collet wrench -- brilliant! No separate wrench needed to change bits (but you still need one to futz with mandrels). Easier to take with me than the corded one--no extension cord. Comes in a nice (but bulky) fabric case with a few accessories No flex shaft, but I have one from my older Dremel tool. I use a Dremel tool on almost every project -- to cut, to sand, to polish. I have the carving burrs and use those often in woodworking. I bought this tool so that I could have two tools, each with a different bit, to save swapping bits in and out, not thinking that it would replace my old corded Dremel, but it certainly has. IMO the 8250 or 8260 are over-priced. The 8240 is not brushless, but I'm not worried about that. And who really needs to control a Dremel tool with a phone? Like, come on!
    The short story: BUY THIS TOOL.

    The Dremel 8240 is a cordless, battery operated tool, that can be used indoors and outdoors equally well. It is powered by a 12v Lithium-Ion battery with home charger, extra batteries can be purchased for more outdoor time. The tool has variable speed from 5,000 to 35,000 rpm controlled by a small rotary dial. Build quality is very good ant these tools will stand up to hard wear. Very easy to use, the size is not much longer that the ac mains version. The design looks very good with its two tone light and dark grey body. For its size it is very light weight and it works great. I love it as I can usit for little jobs on my car as well as the workbench. I would advise owners to invest in a Dremel 3-jaw chuck wich makes using small drills a lot easier. Great tool highly recommended.

    Excellent Cordless Dremel tool that I purchased for sharpening my chain saws using a Dremel optional kit yet of course works with most all the other dremel accessories, blades, disks etc. Battery charges easily in its own charger and enables the tool to function at 35K easily. While more costly than a corded model the portability more than makes up for this. I have not expeienced any overheating. While the tool is a bit larger than a corded model I would order it again if needed.
