About the author

Brooklyn-based Douglas Davis enjoys being one of the variety of voices needed in front of and behind the concept, strategy, or execution. His approach to creativity combines right-brained creative problem-solving with left-brained strategic thinking. The unique mix of strategy, integrated marketing, and art direction is what Douglas brings into the boardroom or classroom. In his first book, “Creative Strategy and the Business of Design,” Douglas uses the day he stumbled into a strategy meeting as the starting point for this guide to integrating strategy into design execution.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2018Verified PurchaseThis book has helped me understand a lot of what goes on behind the scenes of designing. There are a lot of business concepts in this book that give you great insight on how top creatives work and build successful creative projects that match the business goals of a company. At the end of the book, there is an included chapter of assignments that you can work through to put the concepts in the book into action which really help you think through what you read and reinforce the ideas from the book (which is a huge plus since i had no idea where to begin to implement these ideas). Definitely a book you want to keep on hand to reference and look back on.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 26, 2018Verified PurchaseThank you for writing this book. I was studying to be an accountant before Design found me, and having a business background certainly helped me stand out among more talented designers. Reading this book helps me to have a deeper understanding of the real business needs behind my clients' creative requests and gives me a more coherent way to talk about the interrelationship between business and design in a way that clients understand.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 2, 2019Verified PurchaseIf you want to bridge the gap of understanding between the business and creative world, this book will give you the insight that you need. As a designer, I wish this book could be part of a business curriculum for those of pursuing a degree in any creative field.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 19, 2016This book is for creative professionals who want to understand more about the business aspect of design industry. It has lots of insights that should benefit freelancers, especially those who have to work with clients, big companies.
This book goes through the why of design. It answers questions like who are the customers that you're targeting, how you should target them, how to be relevant to them, and how to meet the business objectives of your clients who are paying you. There are explanation of different strategies involved, how you should approach your project and the different aspects to consider besides design itself.
So it's not just as simple as coming up with a beautiful graphic. It's about making your work relevant to people who see it so that it can be effective at bringing the message across.
The content is not something you would expect to be taught at design schools. And it's precisely because of that that this book is going to be helpful to creative professionals, especially those who have ambitions of creating work with greater impact.
Overall, the concepts presented allows you to take a top down view at creative work. It's mostly strategy, and it explains the difference between strategy and execution. If you want more practical hands-on advice, I would recommend you check out Burn Your Portfolio: Stuff they don't teach you in design school, but should too.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are a creative professional, you must get this book!
Verified PurchaseAfter watching an interview with Douglas Davis on The Futur’s YouTube channel, I knew I had to get this book.
The amount of knowledge crammed into these pages is astounding, everything from business term definitions, business models, best practices for process and a wealth of other tricks and tips. They are all presented in an approachable and engaging way, supported with articles from Douglas' peers.
I've been frantically scribbling down notes whilst reading, and I can't wait to start applying these principles to my own working practices. After reading this book, you will never look at Creative Strategy or the Business of Design in the same way!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for creatives
Verified PurchaseThis book is a great resource for all creatives looking to add more value to their work and have a deeper understanding of the necessary process behind design execution. It has approachable, actionable steps that you can begin implementing immediately. This book will help you become a more thoughtful designer and increase your understanding of the strategy behind any design brief or project.
On a personal level, I always felt like I was missing a piece of the puzzle when working on creative client projects. I knew there was a more strategic way of beginning new design projects, but wasn't quite sure how to get there consistently. This book helped me solidify my project process, understand the language around business and strategy, know the right questions to ask when beginning any design project and understand how to organize incoming information to better inform my design goals.
I was able to start putting Douglas's concepts into practice right away and have already seen a shift in the way I structure and execute new projects.
Thank you Douglas!
