I bought two of these Blu Ray writers and installed them in two different computers (Windows 10 and 11). Windows recognized both of the drives, and automatically installed the necessary drivers. I was able to use both drives without installing any of the software that came with them.

To test the drives, I inserted a Blu Ray M-Disc into one of them, and then saved about 20 gigabytes of data on it. Then I asked the computer to eject the disk. Next, I inserted the same disk into the Blu Ray drive in the second computer. It was able to read the data. It was also able to write additional data to the same disk.

Out of curiosity, I also attempted to save some data to a blank CD-R disc, using this blu-ray drive, and that succeeded as well.

The only shortcoming was that while Windows was able to correctly determine the amount of free space remaining on the M-disc, it greatly under-reported the amount of space that was already used. I believe this is the fault of Windows, not the drive.

Based on my experience with these drives so far, I am very impressed with them, and I highly recommend them.

To be clear, this review is about the ASUS BW-16D1HT blu ray writer.

The M-Disc brand I used was the Verbatim BD-R 25GB 4X with Branded Surface - 25pk Spindle. The ASIN is B011PZALWA.

I am using these M-Discs to archive important data. Verbatim claims that this type of disk is made with inorganic materials, so it resists deterioration and bit-rot for at least several centuries. Hence, it is far more durable than conventional DVD-R discs, which is why it is suitable for long-term data archiving.

I purchased this because of its ability to use M-Disks. I have a lot of Photographs that I would like to keep safe. I made an M-Disk DVD for a friend's wedding photos. So far no problems. Unfortunately this did not have Blu-Ray playback software, so I had to download a freeware software program. The playback is good. I occasionally get a hiccup during playback, but over all, it runs quite smoothly. The one star deduction is for not having Blu-Ray playback software (after all... the whole purpose of a Blu-Ray capable device is to be able to play a Blu-Ray back).

I got this so I could start ripping my Blurays for a PLEX media server. After installing on computer I was able to immediately rip Bluray discs with MakeMKV without issue. I saw some comments in the reviews about not updating firmware. I did not use the disc that came with the device, just plug and play.

Finally upgraded to read UHD-BD's. I have MakeMKV and DVDFab Passkey. The only issues I have with certain discs are mostly from Lionsgate (See The Cabin in The Woods UHD-BD). John Wick 1 and King Kong (2005) worked perfectly in MakeMKV. John Wick 1 was quieter than King Kong when copying.
Looking to expand my 4K collection now that my BD collection is quite heavy.

I had this drive for 2 days and it failed on so many levels. First of all, I understand that these things are loud when they read fast. But the issue was that, with mine at least, it was like a car revving. Very annoying. Sure, it could read the Blu-rays fine but it was still unreliable: I put one of the blu-rays it miraculously burned back in to copy the files back from them because I couldn't trust them long term. Will trying to access the files from explorer, it was revving like a car and Files Explorer would hang. Even if I was succeful doing a copy of the files, it would hang midway transfering the files.

That's not all. I talked of BD-R burning and how it's bad. Let me explain further.

I purchased a pack of 25 Verbatim BD-R spindle (ASIN: B00471HK0Q) to save some backups I had on two my hard drives. The first one that I tried, I tried with Ashampoo Burning Studio Free. It wouldn't even start the burn. Moved to ImgBurn after. With that first disc, I was never able to get it past the first aahse of burning (before even the LeadIn).

Moved to another disc. I was able, painfully, burn data on it at 8x. And I was able to do 5 others. Only 2 of the 6 I burnt went without issue in a time frame I judge acceptable. The burning fail by either getting stuck at the very beginning, it timed-out in the middle of a burn once (scrapping another BD-R), got stuck at "Synchronizing Data" for 8 hours (see screenshot) with no result (another scrapped BD-R) and, finally, after burning a CD-R test and got into verify portion of the burn, the drive just shut off doing jack all. I cannot, for the life of me, have confidence in this drive for what I wanted to do: backup some blu-rays and burn some.

Some would say, "what's your setup? i blame your troubles on that!". My case is a Corsair 680X and that doesn't have a 5.25" drive bay. So, for a while before that, I got a UGREEN SATA to USB 3 adaptor (ASIN: B016JTH8FA) to transfer some data off some dying HDD and migrate them to 4TB ones. When I changed PC which the case I named above, I took out my old LG UH10LS20 which was a BD reader + CD and DVD writer (BD laser was dead) and use the adaptor with it with no issues whatsoever (OK, maybe some audio CDs were more problematic, probably because of the drive's age (10+yo)). So, I know that's not the issue here.

Bottom line, save yourself some trouble and don't get this. Now, I just kinda don't want to deal with BD drives anymore with this bad experience (P.S I never intended to rip 4K BDs)

My drive had the 3.10 firmware.

(About the rate features: It's still easy to use and install. Just does not function correctly).
