If you're looking for books that'll help you grow as an artist, you've more than likely already heard of this book. Either just from its reputation or perhaps you've seen/heard/read other artists swear by this book. Surely it can't be that good, right?

    It can and is.

James Gurney is an incredibly talented illustrator & a very great teacher so the contents of this book can be easily followed & applied to your own work.

Each page basically has its own technique that it teaches you (reflective light, bounce light etc) and each page is accompanied with one of Gurney's many illustrations that perfectly show of whatever he is teaching you. So this book is filled with great informative explanations AND with illustrations to help you visualize what Gurney is teaching you on that page.

I cannot recommend this book enough, for new artists and seasoned artists...you're guaranteed to come away with something you didn't know beforehand.

I read this cover to cover and it was very... enLIGHTening.
Seriously though, this book will change how you look at things by giving you the science and psychology behind visual perception. I'm no great artist, just an amateur, and I feel like it was easy to understand. The example images were good and I didn't feel like there was any useless text - it was edited to be very concise.
The book will also give you loads of practical advice on how to put it all into practice, especially if you're into oil painting. It's quite detailed about oil painting - enough that though I've never oil painted in my life (I'm into digital mediums) I feel like I have the confidence to try it if I wanted to. Totally worth the money and it's going in my personal library for reference.

The trouble with ignorance is that one does not know one is ignorant, until one is no longer ignorant.

Though I've studied art in various forms for over two decades, until I've read this book I remained chiefly ignorant of Colour and Light.

As a reference, this book is an absolute must! It answered many questions that I did not know I had, and some I did not know how to ask.

James Gurney dissects theories of light and colour into an easy reference that is a pleasure to read. He approaches art from an artist's view, as well as a scientific view. The amount of his knowledge at times can be quite frightening. Before reading this book, I thought I knew quite a bit about working with colour. Now, I realize how much of my work was instinctive, and I can only anticipate improvement in my work when that instinct is tempered by my freshly gained knowledge.

Reading the table of contents should be enough to convince you that this book will be worth your money and your time. It does not hurt your decision making to know that Mr. Gurney's art is beautiful, or that it enriches this book with the art to text ratio of ~ 7: 3.

Lastly, when you are finished reading this book, if you feel that you still need further explanations, Mr. Gurney includes a list of books you can use to continue your study.

    What else can I say?

'Colour and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter' by James Gurney is absolutely amazing. Thank you Mr. G for writing it, and I look forward to reading your other and future work.

Yes! You should buy this! I refer to this book more than any other book I have about painting. I have read it through several times and still enjoy going back to it and using it as a reference. Even if you don't paint, it's worth it for the pictures, lots of great pictures of Gurney's plein air work, studio works, and portraits. Really good info about reflections, limited palettes, colour choices.... there's just so much good stuff in here. What a gift to have an artist like this who is also a good teacher, AND can write an instructional book in a way that doesn't make you fall asleep on your palette.

This is a very good book when used as a reference. However, to fully understand the concepts it really helps to have some prior knowledge of how colour and/or light works. The emphasis is definitely on oil painting, which is a shame as watercolorists, on the whole, do not use white pigments to lightenen their paints.
Don't be put off by the fact that this is Volume 2. This book is complete in itself.

Colour and light theory is a complicated and large subject. Gurney does a great job of presenting and succinctly explaining these difficult topics. Gurney provides great examples from his own work. This book is quite dense with information and will reward the reader who returns to read it a few times.

This book has so much teaching information in it. I wish this book would have been my first book I purchased on art and learning to use light to bring my art to life. I recommend that you buy this first before any other. A wealth of information. It makes you pay attention to the light in our world! Amazing book!
