John Travolta gives a career-best performance in Brian De Palma’s stylish, paranoid thriller, with Nancy Allen and John Lithgow
Product description
In the enthralling Blow Out, brilliantly crafted by Brian De Palma (Sisters, Carrie, Scarface), John Travolta (Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction) gives one of his greatest performances, as Jack, a movie sound-effects man who believes he has accidentally recorded a political assassination. He enlists the help of Sally (played by Carrie’s Nancy Allen), a possible eyewitness to the crime who may be in danger herself, to uncover the truth. With its jolting stylistic flourishes, intricate plot, profoundly felt characterizations, and gritty evocation of early-1980s Philadelphia, Blow Out is an American paranoia thriller unlike any other, as well as a devilish reflection on the act of moviemaking.
DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New, restored digital transfer, supervised by director Brian De Palma • New hour-long interview with De Palma, conducted by filmmaker Noah Baumbach • New interview with star Nancy Allen • Cameraman Garrett Brown on the Steadicam shots featured in the film within the film • Select on-set photos from photographer Louis Goldman • Original theatrical trailer • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Sragow and Pauline Kael’s original New Yorker review

- Reviewed in Canada on December 28, 2023Verified PurchaseA brilliant film showing some of the characteristic DePalma directorial touches that persist in his later films.
This one is a real time capsule - a style and theme evocative of the era. Travolta and Nancy Allen are (again) excellent together and the supporting cast features the usual quirky, seedy characters that always seem to show up.
Really interesting that this movie is “about” movies in some way - how they were made at the time and that too makes for very interesting elements.
The Criterion collection is as always beautifully presented with lots of interesting features.
Highly recommend!

- Reviewed in Canada on June 13, 2020Verified PurchaseLove the movie and release from Criterion but there were dodgy elements to the film. Not having done any technical restoration for media I can only imagine it’s allot of work. That said, the images with the flashback scene were crazy grainy and required some attention. Otherwise with the exception of a few very poorly restored imagery this is a solid release. Perhaps Criterion Collection’s reputation has grown more than the competitors but those interested in pristine media are always on the lookout for the best quality. It was director approved so this must be the best film elements they had to work with.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 14, 2018Verified PurchaseWell done thriller. A movie sound engineer out recording sounds for an upcoming movie witnesses a car crashing off a bridge and plummeting into a lake below. But when he later checks the sounds he recorded. He discovers that it wasn’t any ordinary blow out that caused the accident. The tire was shot out.
But we soon find out that someone else knows that he knows and his life is in danger

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnifique.
