Product description

In the enthralling Blow Out, brilliantly crafted by Brian De Palma, John Travolta gives one of his greatest performances, as a film sound-effects man who believes he has accidentally recorded a political assassination. To uncover the truth, he enlists the help of a possible eyewitness to the crime (Nancy Allen), who may be in danger herself. With its jolting stylistic flourishes, intricate plot, profoundly felt characterizations, and gritty evocation of early-1980s Philadelphia, Blow Out is an American paranoia thriller unlike any other, as well as a devilish reflection on moviemaking. DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features • Interview with director Brian De Palma, conducted by filmmaker Noah Baumbach • Interview with actor Nancy Allen • Murder à la Mod, a 1967 feature by De Palma • Interview with cameraman Garrett Brown on the Steadicam shots featured in the film within Blow Out • On-set photographs by Louis Goldman • Trailer • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic Michael Sragow and Pauline Kael’s original New Yorker review of the film

A brilliant film showing some of the characteristic DePalma directorial touches that persist in his later films.

This one is a real time capsule - a style and theme evocative of the era. Travolta and Nancy Allen are (again) excellent together and the supporting cast features the usual quirky, seedy characters that always seem to show up.

Really interesting that this movie is “about” movies in some way - how they were made at the time and that too makes for very interesting elements.

The Criterion collection is as always beautifully presented with lots of interesting features.

    Highly recommend!

Love the movie and release from Criterion but there were dodgy elements to the film. Not having done any technical restoration for media I can only imagine it’s allot of work. That said, the images with the flashback scene were crazy grainy and required some attention. Otherwise with the exception of a few very poorly restored imagery this is a solid release. Perhaps Criterion Collection’s reputation has grown more than the competitors but those interested in pristine media are always on the lookout for the best quality. It was director approved so this must be the best film elements they had to work with.

Well done thriller. A movie sound engineer out recording sounds for an upcoming movie witnesses a car crashing off a bridge and plummeting into a lake below. But when he later checks the sounds he recorded. He discovers that it wasn’t any ordinary blow out that caused the accident. The tire was shot out.
But we soon find out that someone else knows that he knows and his life is in danger
