THE BATMAN

THE BATMAN

The Batman is two years into his role as Gotham’s embodiment of vengeance – a nocturnal vigilante who strikes fear in the hearts of criminals. While questioning his family’s legacy, the reclusive scion of Gotham’s richest family stalks the streets at night, employing a lethal combination of mental mastery, physical strength and expert technology on his journey to becoming the city’s symbol of hope.

SELINA KYLE

SELINA KYLE

Selina Kyle is a mysterious figure who is quietly infiltrating Gotham’s seedy underbelly to further her own agenda. Her fierce attitude and tenacious agility are the perfect tools to excel as a cat burglar, but hidden underneath the array of identities and motorcycle leathers is a protective soul who’s more at home with the city’s strays than its citizens.

THE RIDDLER

THE RIDDLER

The Riddler has quickly established himself as Gotham’s deadliest threat yet. This enigmatic, masked killer has devised a sinister series of puzzles and tortuous devices to entrap Gotham’s elite and publicly unmask the city’s darkest truths.

THE PENGUIN

THE PENGUIN

The Penguin, aka “Oz,” is the proprietor of Gotham’s exclusive nightlife hotspot, The Iceberg Lounge, a meeting place for the city’s underworld. While this shady crook is known for running his mouth as well as running operations for the city’s top gangster, Carmine Falcone, he definitely has designs on even more.

The Batman

Product description

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high‐profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens. When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

In The Batman, water is one of the characters. It's always raining, both metaphorically & actually. But, just as with so much else in this city, the rain isn't doing its job: it isn't washing the city clean. Instead, it just adds to the general malaise.
Gotham is also a character. Looking, & feeling, like New York City circa the 1970s, Gotham's streets are always wet, always dirty, always menacing. The trash overflows every bin in sight & graffiti is the art form de jour. Street gangs roam seemingly at will & no place, & no one, is safe. You can be attacked just as easily in the haunts of the rich & powerful as you can on the subway. Gotham is dying because the rot is not just relegated to the alleys & those that rule them. As we come to see, that rot has infected Gotham at every level, a cancer that has had a long, long time to metastisize.
Into this dystopian nightmare, fully formed, steps The Batman, a Dark Knight indeed. When asked who he is on Halloween Night, he replies "I'm Vengeance." The Batman deals out his own brand of street justice & woe to anyone who gets in his way when he's dealing it. This Batman is definitely not like any of his earlier TV or movie iterations, even Chris Nolan's. Even in Nolan's films, although the Dark Knight is dark, Christian Bale's Caped Crusader never matches Pattinson's. This film is seismic departure in other areas as well.
For starters, it's never really explained why a billionaire orphan would morph into Batman. Even the fact that his parent's we're murdered in front of him doesn't really seem to cover why Bruce Wayne would don the costume of a bat & ride around Gotham on his motorcycle risking his life bashing baddies & chasing corruption. If this film has one glaring flaw, for me, this was it.
    Otherwise, it's superb!
Pattinson's Batman is believable from his first scene to his last. His Batman isn't the campy, supremely confident & somewhat narcissistic super hero who stands on Gotham's skyscrapers, looking down at the jewel of a city spread at his feet. This Batman, although a young man chronologically, is tired, as tied as someone three times his age. He's also unsure that anything he's doing is making a real difference, a fact alluded to in the film's first few minutes. He also shows the scars, both physical & emotional, of his dark journey. The wounds on his body correspond to those in his psyche, a psyche that inhibits, among other things, his relationship with Cat Women, as well as Alfred. This isn't the campy, over the top Caped Crusader you're used to. And neither are the other characters, or the villains.
One of the principle other characters is Zoe Kravitz's Cat Women. This isn' Michele Pfeiffer becoming the Feline Menace because of a physical trauma. Instead, Cat Women is a product of the very streets Batman wants to cleanse. She's smart, sexy &, given the right impetus, lethal. Corner her, or threaten anyone she cares for, & you'd best be ready to get your ass kicked, hard! The electricity between her & Batman, always humming whenever they meet, is another highlight of this film. As are its villains.
Paul Dano's Riddler is so chilling because he's so real. Again, this isn't some campy super villain like Jack Nicholson's Joker, or Danny De Vito's Penguin, characters that had no menace outside of the film they were in. In this iteration of the Riddler, Dano could just as easily have stepped right out of CNN reporting another mass casualty incident. This Riddler doesn't caper around in some outlandish costume. Instead, he got his threads at an army surplus store & he's very, very popular on social media. He also loathes the 1% & their enablers & he is going to do something about that.
The other major villain is played by John Turturro who, as usual, is letter perfect. He plays a mob boss whose tentacles reach into some very unexpected stratas of Gotham City. Again though, this character isn't over the top. He could just as easily have stepped out of Martin Scorsese's Good Fellas, or The Irishman, as a Batman flic. Falcone is, like all of the other characters, so menacing because he's so real.
I was prepared not to like this film but, just as I was when I watched the first episode of The Sopranos, I was totally captivated. This is a Batman I can relate to, someone as bruised, scarred & bewildered as the rest of us, tying to make sense of a new century that doesn't seem to be getting any better.
Someone fire up the Bat Signal, please!

I enjoyed The Batman in theaters and in turn bought this bluray. My gut reaction is that it's not the best Batman movie there is; I still lean to The Dark Knight for that one. But it's high on the scale, and delivers a new Batman experience.

A few things do hold it back. Pattinson does a great job as Batman, I felt pulling a little from Bale and little from Keaton. But I also felt his Bruce Wayne was a little weak. The Riddler worked just fine, but not as compelling as Ledger's Joker. Zoe Kravitz did okay as Cat Woman, but in my eyes no one has yet topped Pfeiffer's Cat Woman performance.

For the number of villains they crammed into the movie, they managed their time impressively well to keep from getting too bloated, although I still wish I saw a little more of Riddler. The overall story arc was also interesting, and has a nice blend of detective story meets action movie, with even a little hint of Se7en thrown in there. However, with an almost 3 hour run time, it did feel like they could've tighten things up a bit. Although it has the coherently managed characters and interesting plot, I don't think they would've have sacrificed too much if they took out one character or story thread. I could even have lived with them maybe going the other route by spending more time on some plot points and spreading it out into two movies.

On the flip side, my eldest said that he thinks it might be the best Batman movie, so maybe this is his generation's defining version that others will have to compete with has he gets older. It also sets up some fantastic imagery that will stick in the minds of viewers for years to come when they think of Batman, I'm sure. And let me circle around again to where I started by confirming I thought it was great, and do recommend it, but I didn't find it mind-blowing-amazing.
