Directions

DIRECTIONS: In a pot with a lid, add 1 part Steel Cut Oats to 3 parts cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, stir & cover. Simmer for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally until creamy. Serve with milk & honey, or any topping you like. Steel Cut Oat cereal is creamy and chewy and a great way to start your day.

Pros: Anita is ahead for texture, quality and being closest to the groats taste. The cooking test: Anita is chewier. In the look + quality test, Anita has more uniform grains, and cleaner. In cooking time test: Anita takes 1/3 longer ( Bob is the quick cooking steel cut, Anita is reg. steel cut). Price test: Anita = $8 /kg, Bob= $ 10/ kg. Resealable bag, for both. Anita closer to coarser, chewier texture,less smoother+ creamier, takes longer to eat. For both brands, Steel cut is chopped oat groats, higher in fibre+ density+complex carbs, more bang for the nutrition buck.
Tips
-Anita comes in 1 kg pack only- Bob can be bought in 3.2 kg wholesale bag.
-Soak overnight with pinch salt or A.C.vinegar / Lemon juice to reduce phytic acid. Next morn, throw away soaking water, add 1:3 oats: water , cook 5 mins med. on 1000 W micro, uncovered.
-Anita vs Bob: She got more personality. Invite Anita into your home for a hearty slow food breakfast time. :-)

We have steel cut oats fairly regularly and due to Covid had trouble finding our regular brand for a few months, so we tried several other brands, including Anitas.

Now that supplies are easier to get, we can order any brand of oats (yay!), and we've decided to stick with Anitas. The taste is better - it's fresher for sure. As a grain, oats can go rancid so fresher oats are noticeably better tasting. They have a better bite to them and less inconsistencies in size.

I was pleasantly surprised to realize these are from Chilliwack, BC - so a nice bonus to support a Fraser Valley brand.
