Product description

Product Description

Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel¡¯s publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the ¡°killer virus¡± biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico ¨C and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict.? The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak.? Realizing that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus ¨C codenamed ¡°Andromeda¡± ¨C before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise¡¯s suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative. If you are a serious sci-fi fan, this is a very realistic movie that has a very good plot involving biological warfare. There are no silly fantasies in this movie. The special effects are outdated but they were quite good if you consider that this film was produced in 1971. Also, this new release is a very good bluray 1080p conversion of the classic original movie. I found no grainny pictures when played on my bluray player. The picture quality is much better than in the original DVD release.

I'll refrain from commenting on the movie itself. Obviously, I love it (who buys the Blu-ray of a 40-year-old movie they *don't* like?). Instead, I'll confine my remarks to this particular release of the film.

First, the picture is excellent. I found the transfer to be sharp and the colors pleasingly saturated. The Wildfire set still looks great!

The audio is a bit of a disappointment. It's disappointing that it's just mono, but I can understand that. Probably not a big enough audience for this to justify going back to the original tapes and breaking out all of the sound effects, dialogue, and music into a nice 5.1 surround mix.

But one of the very best elements of this film, the amazing soundtrack by the avant garde composer Gil Melle, is kind of buried in places--particularly the beautiful and haunting Piedmont Elegy, which plays during the montage of the scientists' exploration of the doomed town of Piedmont. This electronic soundtrack was completely synthesized without Moog synthesizers, as far as I know. All these years later, I still find it effective.

Finally, the special features are excellent. The interview with Robert Wise in which he explains how they "killed" the buffalo rat on camera alone is worth the price of admission. And I also found the documentary on Michael Crichton really interesting.

In letzteren allerdings sehr "Fiction", in Andromeda sehr "Science".

A classic taken from the novel by Michael Crichton who gave us works like Jurassic Park & Westworld just to name a couple of his hundreds of books. I first saw it in the 70's when I was a kid and it scared the hell out me. Full of plot twists & suspence. One of the great movies that makes you think.
