Product description

Akira isn¡¯t just a movie ¨C it¡¯s the genesis of a genre. Katsuhiro Otomo¡¯s landmark cyberpunk classic obliterated the boundaries of Japanese animation and forced the world to look into the future. Akira¡¯s arrival shattered traditional thinking, creating space for movies like the The Matrix to be dreamed into brutal reality. Without Kaneda and Tetsuo, without espers and psionic assassins, without that badass motorcycle ¨C our world would be a far less exciting place to exist.

But the manga became the movie and the movie became a phenomenon and the world took notice. Now, Akira is everywhere. If you can¡¯t see it in the streets ¨C if you can¡¯t feel it crawling around inside your brain ¨C then you have yet to be initiated. What. Are. You. Waiting. For?

this 4K HDR version is a huge upgrade to the blu ray that I own. richer colors and cleaner visuals with less artifacts and grain. Words can't do enough to describe it so here's a side by side comparison I took on my LG C9 OLED TV. I think it'll be obvious which is 1080p blu ray and which is 4K HDR blu ray. (keep in mind that my Google Pixel phone enhanced the colors of the photos, the colors of the 1080p don't look that rich in real life)

This movie was the first thing that I ever saw as a child, that turned me on to the anime genre. I watched it when I was around 8 or 9, (against my mother's wishes, of course-- as she felt that it might be too violent/graphic for my little mind and eyes to see.) Thankfully though, I rebelled... and watched it with my uncle. My views on anime were forever changed. Up until viewing Akira, I had only experienced things like Pokemon, Digimon, and of course, Sailor Moon. Not that these shows were now terrible or anything, but these shows were for young kids, and even though I was still in the young kid category... I had moved on to bigger and greener pastures. Though Pokemon and company did have action, and sometimes (to small children) emotional moments, it was nothing compared to what I had just witnessed with Akira. Finally, I understood and knew that anime, in its beautiful, hand drawn details, as well as gripping stories... was an art. Cue what started a hobby and passion of mine. Japan was daring to show audiences something that nobody else could even attempt-- to the utmost degree. As an avid fan of the anime genre, I would say that Akira is required viewing. However, be warned, as this story is not for the faint of heart. Though gifted with a gripping and compelling story, there are some very grotesque and striking visuals. When it comes to the argument of original sub over English dub, I'd have to say I'm a sub fan, but the dub was very watch-able as well, and I did enjoy it. Just go with whatever you prefer. In this edition, however-- you are given a couple of options. If you're a long time fan, the original dub is available, along with a 2001 re-release dub starring Johnny Yong Bosch, and Joshua Seth. The re-release dub is more on par as to what is being spoken in the original Japanese sub. It had been a while since I had watched this gem of a film again, and was more than satisfied with it. As the film that is often viewed as the one that started it al with having anime become more mainstream, along with that iconic red motorbike, if you are an anime fan and you haven't already... please, go and watch this great film.

I feel as if computer animation has taken the soul out of anime movies. This is why Akira is so good. It represents the pinnacle of what a hand drawn anime project can be. The effort and detail that was put into this movie will never be surpassed in entertainment. There will never be another movie that can match the vibe of Akira. It's perfection. I got the 4k/Bluray combo on Prime Day for a huge discount and I couldn't be happier. When I show my friends how good it is it makes them jealous!

This is not the first time Akira has been released on 4K, but this is the time when there will be fewer headaches for fans. This 4K version of Akira appears to be the same release as the previous one that came out last year. However, the biggest difference is this time, the disc actually is 4K and HDR, whereas the initial batch in the previous release was 4K but lacked the HDR color boost and required exchanges from unhappy customers to get it.

This is also at a lower price than the initial release, reflecting the fact that this is NOT a special collector's edition and that fans are getting extras, but not any brand new extras exclusive to this latest release.

So what do people get with this? The 4K/HDR image is fantastic and, as hoped, the best the movie has ever looked as the sharpness of 4K brings out the texture of paint in the traditionally painted backgrounds and the details in the animations cels. The HDR, however, really boosts the colors, especially the reds in Kaneda's jacket and bike or the highlights of headlights on motorcycles in the many vehicle scenes. Overall, it's a boost from the original Blu-Ray release, but not so dramatic that BD owners necessarily need to ditch their disc and upgrade to this one. Some Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) has been applied here, so if you love grain in your image, you're not seeing a ton of it here.

Where the latest home video version falters for some is in the audio. While the 4K/HDR brings the film's visual quality up to par with modern home video standards, the audio has not been remixed into Dolby Atmos; it's still Dolby TrueHD 5.1, so home theater owners with an Atmos setup won't get any benefits here, which is a shame since some of the action sequences in Akira would have benefited enormously from a new Dolby Atmos sound stage. The mix present, though, is pretty aggressive and makes use of the surrounds a lot, especially with the soundtrack. However, audio purists who need the absolute highest quality audio won't get that here, as the Japanese version uses higher quality audio compared to the Western release. If that needing the absolute highest audio bitrate possible is something that matters to you, get the Japanese 4K release, not this Western one.

However, the audio is also presented in the original Japanese language track, as well as the original 1988 English dub and the newer dub done for the blu-ray remaster several years ago. The 5.1 mix is still good and will shake the room for those with the subwoofers to handle it, but it's the same mix we've heard before.

The same is true for the extras, all sourced from previous versions and included on the second disc in the set, the blu-ray 1080p version of the film. Director interviews, documentaries about the original HD restoration, and features on the music of Akira are all great, in-depth, and substantial but not new to this latest release.

All in all, this is a reasonably priced, standard consumer, non-collectors version of a giant in anime film history. The image quality is top-tier, the audio is great, but not Dolby Atmos, and the features are comprehensive but not new. At this price, however, it's a must-own for fans that haven't yet upgraded to a 4K version and want it. If Dolby Atmos isn't a huge priority for you, this is a great addition.
