AgriOtter Electric Fence Energizer

AgriOtter Electric Fence Energizer
I'm an oyster farmer on the west coast of Vancouver Island BC, Canada 🇨🇦. I grow my oysters suspended under 24'x24' wooden rafts. Last couple of years I had tremendous invasion of sealions resting on my rafts. I was afraid that those heavy beasts could trash and destroy my rafts. I decided to put up a electric fence around the perimeter of each raft. My choice of this energizer was dictated by economical price and many good reviews. It delivers a powerful jolt, and I know that for a fact touching the fence accidentally. It runs on 12v deep cycle battery, which is charged for a 100 watt solar panel. I just hooked it up and so far it is keeping the sealions away from my rafts. Thanks AgriOtter 😊

i assume this works ok other than. The blinking light on it is so dim it can only be seen if you stare at it in dim light from exactly the right angle. To me this sucks because that is what i continually reference with an electric fence to make sure it is on. I will probably try and sell this on marketplace and buy something i can tell if i turned it on or not.

It works, not sure how long though. I had two fencers giving up on me in the past after only two years. It does not tick, like all my other fencers did. Which is good and bad. You cannot hear if it's working, but the horses also don't learn when it's on, which they did, previously!!! The light is super tiny and can only be seen directly from the front. I did not use the supplied wires and ground stake. The ground stake is a joke, and the wires are tiny. The electrical cord is also pretty short, compared to previous fencers. I have not used the battery option , and would need different connectors too, they are super flimsy. But overall I have a working fencer for less than half the price of the cheapest one available in the area, with additional battery option. I am happy with it!

I have an electric fence to protect my garden/orchard and my old fencer died. I have a few cheap fence testers. This unit maxes out the 7k tester with full bright lights and dimly lights the 10k light on the other. I'm using a full 6' ground rod and would be hesitant to use the little ground spike included.

I have 2 minor complaints. 1. The indicator light is very dim. You can hear the fencer way before you can see the light. 2. A power switch is handy in my application and this enegrizer has none. ( I fixed this with a switched outdoor extension cord)

Too soon to know the longevity for me, but so far I'm very pleased for the price point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Working fine so far, nice strong "zap"

    Update 2:
The AC to 12vdc adapter ("wall wart") was unprotected at the end of an extension cord during a big rainstorm. The adapter, which looks like it is sealed, filled with water and died. So be sure to protect the adapter from weather. The fence charger was also exposed to rain, but it survived just fine. Of course it should also be protected if possible.

    Update 1:
A bear finally decided to test the fence. She didn't like it. Video attached. This is a mama bear with two cubs that visits often. (At least I think this is Mama bear, I'm not very good at identifying individual bears). The bear touches the wire out of frame, but comes running back through the picture at a dead run.

    Original:
So far I'm happy with this fence charger/energizer. It's way overkill for my setup, but I am trying to keep bears away from my chickens. My tester pegs at 10kv everywhere on the fence. Now we just have to wait for a bear to show up to see how it works for deterring bears. Note: I used a 4ft copper ground rod into moist soil. Longer would be better. The included "rod" is junk. Also, as someone else mentioned, the post studs are too darned short, but they can be made to work.

Charger is connected to RentaCoop poultry fence that surrounds three sides of the coop and forms an outside run with a passthrough from coop. Front of coop is unprotected for now, but I'm working on fixing that (with the green fencing seen on the ground in video). For now the chickens still spend every night in the coop in the barn, this setup is meant to keep them safe during the day. They free-range when I'm there to keep an eye on them, but go into this coop when I'm not around and into the barn at night.

I tried powering the charger with a 100w solar panel (plus battery and solar controller), but its just too shady at the coop. I finally gave in and ran a 100ft extension cord to power it with AC.

The only negative is that this charger is a bit dangerous to small critters.
Last month a bear broke into the barn and killed two chickens before I chased it off. So I bought another of these and used it to energize the metal gates at both ends. So far it has killed 5 toads, 2 millipedes and a cricket that all tried to crawl under the gates. The chicken fencing also killed a toad. I will raise the gate a bit to increase the gap and hopefully stop killing small critters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unit does not last
Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024

I purchased this unit in May of 2023. I liked the feature that it was 12 vdc so I could hook it up to a battery and solar panels since I didn't want to depend on 110 vac since we lose power often in the mountains. The unit worked fine for about 6 months. In December of 2023 I could hear a zapping noise every few seconds coming from the inside of the unit. Upon inspection I found that it was shorting out internally between resistors (R18 & R19) and the ground circuit. I wrote the manufacturer using their online "contact us" web page explaining the issue and asked what could be done to resolve the issue. After waiting over a month without any response from the manufacturer I decided to write this review and purchase a different brand.

If AgriOtter would have responded and resolved the issue, I would not be writing this review.
