The Abyss 4K
After a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in a remote part of the ocean floor, a team of divers on a prototype underwater oil rig are pressed into service by the U.S. Navy in a rescue attempt. When a hurricane cuts off contact between the surface and the underwater depths, the crew begin to see evidence of a strange, possibly alien intelligence at work. While Chief Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) bickers with his ex wife and boss (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the Navy commander begins to grow increasingly paranoid about the mysterious alien life and threatens to use a recovered nuclear weapon to desTroy everything.

Streaming is alright, but 4K from this disk has spectacular picture and audio quality.
Highly Recommended,
- Reviewed in Canada on March 14, 2024Verified PurchaseFor over twenty years, The Abyss has been something of a holy grail for home video enthusiasts. While it enjoyed a good run on VHS, laser disc, and even DVD, the last time the movie was available was a 2000 DVD that was still non-anamorphic, meaning it didn¡¯t automatically adjust to the size of a TV¡¯s screen and was cropped all around in black for a smaller image meant to fit on older CRT TVs.
After all that time and no Blu-Ray version, a new 4K edition has finally dropped, and the TL;DR version is, if you¡¯re a fan of The Abyss and not an ultra-purist about image quality, you absolutely NEED this disc in your collection.
First, let¡¯s get the single negative out of the way. The Abyss 4K is a true 4K scan of the original film, so this isn¡¯t an upscale of an HD film, like early 4K movies such as Man of Steel were; this really is 4K. However, on top of the 4K scan, Cameron, with the help of Peter Jackson¡¯s production company, Park Road Post, used new AI techniques to sharpen the image and reduce¡ªnot scrub entirely¡ªfilm grain. The result for most people will be that this film almost doesn¡¯t look like it was shot in the 80s. But for the eagle-eyed, who pause movies, break out the magnifying glass, and look closely at some shots, it¡¯s possible to spot where the AI hasn¡¯t always done a pristine job, smearing or glitching some small details here and there.
So, for the purists who were hoping for a 4K remaster that didn¡¯t touch the film image at all, this will be rage-inducing and possibly a deal-breaker. For most people, however, this will be orders of magnitude better than the previous DVD version we¡¯ve had to live with for over 20 years, if for no other reason than the image finally stretches to fill the screen. Details are crisp; skin pores are visible; the fabric is textured, and, of course, the HDR brings out a vibrancy to the blue-teal tones and lighting of the movie, with deep, inky blacks appropriate to the deep ocean setting.
Audio-wise, this movie is flat out reference quality. Not only is the sound quality absolutely pristine, but home theater lovers with a good Dolby Atmos setup will get a workout for their systems. Being trapped at the bottom of the ocean with tons of pressure causes metal to groan and creak, and viewers will hear this over them often in an Atmos setup, with lots of ambient noise surrounding them from every angle and height, including dripping water overhead that will make you think your roof needs repair. Subwoofers will get to flex their muscles as well, and this is another one of those movies that will shake walls if you let it.
Finally, the extras are abundant, with viewers getting both the theatrical and special editions of The Abyss in 4K/HDR, all the extras included in previous DVD and laser disc versions of the movie, and a couple of new features created just for this 4K release as well. The packaging labels this the ¡°Ultimate Collector¡¯s Edition,¡± and in this regard, it delivers. Few movies get this depth of extras anymore in the 4K era, but The Abyss is the exception that proves the rule.
In short, this is a must-own version of The Abyss for fans. Image purists who don¡¯t like digital retouching of films might want to skip this one if pausing scenes to hunt for and find the occasional digital artifact makes you angry.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2024Verified PurchaseAlthough this 1989 James Cameron film was not as successful or known as his other films (i.e. Terminator, Aliens, T2, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar) ...THE ABYSS is amazing movie like all of his films. Was a fan of THE ABYSS when it came out on LaserDisc (+ DVD) and waited soooo long for it to come out on the blu-ray/4K to fully enjoy watching on a bigger screen. It's even more impress is how well this movie holds up after 35 years.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this 4K/blu-ray for amazing performances, directing and practical effects (done for real). I could (and have) watched this 1989 film THE ABYSS many, many times.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 14, 2025Verified PurchaseIt¡¯s about time The Abyss was released on something other than another remastered DVD. The 4k transfer is well done and Damn¡ I just love this movie.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 31, 2024Verified PurchaseAdvice, great movies and full of extra but don¡¯t count on the digital code in Canada. The service expired the 31th of December 2024! Cineplex only also.
The movie itself is a must have.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2024Verified PurchaseThis is a GREAT presentation of a film only previously available on VHS and DVD, plus the rare showings on TV. As someone born years after the film's release, this is the best the film has ever looked to me. Given that James Cameron himself oversaw the restoration, much like Criterion promotes with "Director Approved", this is how he wants the film to look. The performances are spectacular, Ed Harris is at the top of his game while the entire cast of characters are memorable and fun. The Abyss is James Cameron's broken masterpiece, and here we get both the theatrical cut and the Director's Cut that adds in roughly 30 minutes with a subplot providing more weight to the discovery in the film.
The supplementary content is largely archival, including a must watch Making Of documentary. There is one new interview with James Cameron that is interesting. Buying this 4K Blu Ray is for the great presentation of the film itself rather than an abundance of bonuses.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 29, 2024Verified PurchaseSeeing this film when I was a young teen I never could get into it. I found it rather slow and not enough action. So I didn't watch it a lot like I did other Cameron films. But as time went on I grew to love it more. Now I rate this as one of his best early works. The task it took him and the rest to make it is mind blowing. But it all shows and feels real on screen. You feel like you are miles down in the darkness of water.
And Finally! we have this move on an HD format. Never getting a release on Blu ray nor 4K until now. The job Cameron did looks really good. Some may find the removal of film grain too much but it really shows off the image here. The effects still look great. I was worried the water tentacles would look dated.
If you have not seen or not owned this movie since its awesome DVD release you must upgrade. The difference is certainly noticeable.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 30, 2024Verified PurchaseEdit: My third disc FINALLY had no scratches and played from start to finish. Rating updated.
Original review:
The movie is one of my favorites, but there seems to be a serious quality issue where these discs are being pressed. I ordered The Abyss 4K and finally received my copy after a couple weeks delay, but the disc had radial / circular scratches. Not sure if it's due to stacking the discs (a bad practice imho) or a separate issue (I suspect the latter) but radial scratches cause read errors in players. Sometimes you can get beyond it by skipping to the next chapter, but who wants that? Not me. My replacement disc was delivered quickly the next day, but the SAME PROBLEM affected the replacement disc! I'll now get a refund and will order at a later time. Hopefully by then the issue will have been resolved. I'll update my review then, but for now, this release will get 1 star out of 5. Very disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arriva finalmente The Abyss in una versione pi¨´ che dignitosa
