*The 23andMe PGS test includes health predisposition and carrier status reports. Health predisposition reports include both reports that meet FDA requirements for genetic health risks and reports which are based on 23andMe research and have not been reviewed by the FDA. The test uses qualitative genotyping to detect select clinically relevant variants in the genomic DNA of adults from saliva for the purpose of reporting and interpreting genetic health risks and reporting carrier status. It is not intended to diagnose any disease. Your ethnicity may affect the relevance of each report and how your genetic health risk results are interpreted. Each genetic health risk report describes if a person has variants associated with a higher risk of developing a disease, but does not describe a person’s overall risk of developing the disease. The test is not intended to tell you anything about your current state of health, or to be used to make medical decisions, including whether or not you should take a medication, how much of a medication you should take, or determine any treatment. Our carrier status reports can be used to determine carrier status, but cannot determine if you have two copies of any genetic variant. These carrier reports are not intended to tell you anything about your risk for developing a disease in the future, the health of your fetus, or your newborn child's risk of developing a particular disease later in life. For certain conditions, we provide a single report that includes information on both carrier status and genetic health risk. Visit 23andMe for important test information.
**23andMe PGS Pharmacogenetics reports: The 23andMe test uses qualitative genotyping to detect 3 variants in the CYP2C19 gene, 2 variants in the DPYD gene and 1 variant in the SLCO1B1 gene in the genomic DNA of adults from saliva for the purpose of reporting and interpreting information about the processing of certain therapeutics to inform discussions with a healthcare professional. It does not describe if a person will or will not respond to a particular therapeutic. Our CYP2C19 Pharmacogenetics report provides certain information about variants associated with metabolism of some therapeutics and provides interpretive drug information regarding the potential effect of citalopram and clopidogrel therapy. Our SLCO1B1 Pharmacogenetics report provides certain information about variants associated with the processing of some therapeutics and provides interpretive drug information regarding the potential effect of simvastatin therapy. Our DPYD Pharmacogenetics report does not describe the association between detected variants and any specific therapeutic. Results for DPYD and certain CYP2C19 results should be confirmed by an independent genetic test prescribed by your own healthcare provider before taking any medical action. Warning: Test information should not be used to start, stop, or change any course of treatment and does not test for all possible variants that may affect metabolism or protein function. The PGS test is not a substitute for visits to a healthcare professional. Making changes to your current regimen can lead to harmful side effects or reduced intended benefits of your medication, therefore consult with your healthcare professional before taking any medical action. Visit 23andMe for important Pharmacogenetics information.
Before you can use the 23andMe services and see your reports, you must agree to 23andMe's Terms of Service and 23andMe’s Privacy Statement at the time of registration of your 23andMe kit.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 21, 2025Verified PurchaseSo glad I caved and bought one. It's a little pricey but if comes on special every once in a while. I also later bought the yearly subscription 99$( you don't have to I just wanted more added)
- Reviewed in Canada on November 14, 2024Verified PurchaseThis product was really easy to use, the instructions were clear and it was easy to send away. The results took longer than expected but we’re very interesting. I don’t like that you have to pay an additional subscription to get access to full results. They should say that more clearly up front
- Reviewed in Canada on May 22, 2019Verified PurchaseMy hubby and I ordered this in separate occasions. It’s really incredible, I almost cried. I found out I got the whole world in my face. I’m Brazilian and found out I’m 66% European (Portuguese), 16% African (Congolese mainly), 12% Native Brazilian (a little percentage Asian and some unassigned), I didn’t suspect this high percentage for African as I am pale white. It was amazing doing this and getting to know a part of myself that I had no idea whatsoever.
Cons: I heard from the grape vine that some of these DNA companies are able to share your DNA with other bodies (FBI, federal police, etc). Also, finding out about an “unwanted” relative (as a man: a kid you might have) or finding out that one of your parents are not your biological, is one of the issues that can occur if one of them have done the test too considering 23andMe matches you with close and distant relatives in their data base. So if you are not concerned with that, go ahead. Another part that might be an unpleasant surprise is the health report: finding out that you are prone to have a serious illness is not something great for many, but you can choose if you want to receive or not the health report by checking a box. I personally thought it was a good idea to receive the health report because if I am prone to something serious then I can prepare myself to the possibility. Glad I haven’t received any bad news to this point, but they are constantly updating. I totally recommend this test.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 4, 2025Verified PurchaseI’m pretty happy with my results. It confirmed what I had suspected, but it was very interesting to see the breakdown. It confirmed what I believed was my main country of ethnic origin, which I wasn’t sure about because one of my parents was adopted. But it also confirmed that I have an ethnicity in me (a trace amount) which was unknown but I had somehow always “felt” it, and it explains why I have certain physical traits that are uncommon given the bulk of my heritage. It validated that which I did not know for sure, but had always wondered.
The only thing I deducted a star for is that it gave some predicted traits that were the complete opposite of what I have. There were quite a few of those.
It did take longer than I had expected to reach the lab, but my full results were available about a month after I had mailed it back. Something to keep in mind is that you need to provide quite a large sample of saliva, and I have chronic dry mouth due to medication. It took me half an hour to produce it, and I would recommend drinking a LOT of water beforehand, but you can’t have had any for at least 30 minutes prior to spitting into the tube. If you are prone to dry mouth, this can be a frustrating experience. But in my case, it was well worth the effort. I didn’t sign up for the subscription, because I can’t afford it, but I am happy with my results in any case.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 13, 2025Verified PurchaseThe waiting time was reasonable.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 25, 2017Verified PurchaseBefore you read my review, I just wanted to inform you in regards to an idiotic review submitted by someone. Google does not own 23andMe and 23andMe also does not sell your information to other companies.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
-More Accurate than AncestryDNA
-Increased accuracy when more family members test
-Doesn't sell your information
-Easy to Use (Only needs saliva to work)
Cons
-Smaller User database (Compared to AncestryDNA) for relative matching
The Review:
I bought this DNA test because I wanted to know more about my genetics. Everyone in my family has believed that they were 100% Chinese and that they don't have any other background. I'm not too sure about that so I bought a DNA kit to make sure. I also wanted to test myself for any genetic risks that I carry if I ever have children so I could prepare myself and my future kids for it.
The main reason I chose 23andMe's DNA test instead of a competitor's was because of 23andMe's continuously updated genetic percentage updater. The more people in your family that test themselves, the more accurate your own genetic percentages will be. I also chose 23andMe because I care about my privacy and after reading their full privacy statement (which contains little to no jargon), I found out that they only use your information for their own company to improve their current products/services. However, if the company ever gets sold, the information that they have will be carried over to the new company so keep this in mind if you decide to buy the DNA kit.
The only disadvantage to using 23andMe instead of AncestryDNA for me was that the user database for 23andMe is much smaller than Ancestry's. If you're using the DNA kit to find relatives, then I would highly recommend you getting Ancestry's kit instead.
Overall, 23andMe's DNA kit seems to be the best available method for finding your ancestry and potential health risks.
