About the authors
Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French author best known for his tales of adventure, including Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in Eighty Days. A true visionary, Verne foresaw the skyscraper, the submarine, and the airplane, among many other inventions, and is now regarded as one of the fathers of science fiction.

- Reviewed in Canada on November 23, 2013Verified PurchaseThere's not much to say about it. The story was great (Jules Verne has a way of writing and portraying his characters that makes you laugh), and the book was delivered very soon. There really was nothing I did not like.

Reviewed in Canada on December 31, 2019Verified PurchaseBoff, pas terrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great practice for keeping up your French
Verified PurchaseI downloaded this onto my Kindle Paperwhite in order to practise my French and because it was free. I also downloaded a Collins French Dictionary for the unknown vocab - there are quite a few words used by Jules Verne that have not made it into the dictionary but I've been getting on very well and laughing out loud on a train journey - which I did not expect. It has been a real joy so far and I would heartily recommend it to people like me who did a languages degree 32 years ago and enjoy something light to keep up the skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read in the original
Verified PurchaseYou can't beat the original of an excellent work like this. In my mind, there are some things lost in translation. For instance, the following passage:
Is translated in English (by American George Makepeace Towle) as:
It may be taken for granted that, rash as the Americans are, when they are prudent there is good reason for it.
This translation is an excellent one that works better in English than a word-for-word translation from the French would. In French though, the sentence reads more like "And besides, with the Americans' tendencies to be so carefree, you could say that when they are prudent it would be crazy not to follow suit."
You really do have to change words to make it flow better in other languages. This is not a critique of the English translation. But doing this makes you lose some of the author's original intent. It's why I really feel the original wins out!
In my mind "there is good reason to be prudent" and "it would be crazy to not be prudent" are not quite the same. The playful American teasing that Jules Verne included gives the text part of its personality, part of its edge; but this is easily watered down in English versions.
Check it out and enjoy it in the words the author himself had written. I was lucky enough to be reading this while in Hong Kong overlooking the port where one of the scenes took place in Verne's mind. One of my favourite ever reading experiences!

5.0 out of 5 stars Un voyage captivant à travers les pages
