"De theorie van de psychoanalyse" van Carl Gustav Jung, voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1915, is een vernietigende veroordeling van Freuds theorieën over seksualiteit, waaronder het oedipuscomplex. Dit was ongelooflijk gênant voor Freud dat zijn leerling het zo krachtig met hem oneens was op een internationaal platform, een bedreiging die Freud nooit heeft gehad in zijn academische carrière. Freuds hegemonie in de psychologie werd door deze lezing op de proef gesteld. Jung begon in deze publicatie het idee van het collectieve onbewuste te verkennen - een gedeeld reservoir van ervaringen en symbolen die universele betekenissen hebben in verschillende culturen. Voortbouwend op zijn eerdere werken zoals de "Diagnostische Assoziationsstudien", ging Jung dieper in op de aard van complexen en beschreef ze als emotioneel geladen groepen ideeën of beelden.
