This is the tenth novel I have read by Leonardo Padura and the first without Mario Conde the erstwhile professional detective turned amateur detective.
This novel is another example of the author’s switch from novels set in the here and now – the gritty here and now of Havana from the late eighties to the Obama presidency – to novels that travel through time from the present to the remote past. In this novel we meet university lecturer Fernando Terry, who wrote a thesis on the nineteenth-century Cuban poet Jose Maria Heredia for his PhD. Fernando believes that Heredia wrote an unpublished memoir – the novel of his life – and he is searching for the manuscript. We know that the memoir was written because the novel is sprinkled with passages from it, but we don’t know if it is still extant as its fate is a mystery. Jose Maria was a freemason and for a long time the manuscript was locked away in a masonic lodge until it was spirited away by one of the brotherhood. There are parallels between Fernando and Jose Maria. The latter was involved in the Cuban independence movement until he was betrayed by a comrade and forced into exile. He returns to Cuba years later and discovers that one of his closest friends betrayed him to the colonial government. Fernando was quietly doing his thing till he was hauled up by the police and interrogated about his connection with someone who has fled Cuba. He loses his university post and leaves Cuba. He returns years later, searching for Jose Maria’s manuscript and convinced that one of his friends betrayed him. As he meets up with people and hunts for the memoir he accuses one friend after another of stabbing him in the back…
I’ll say no more about the plot. Although there is no Mario Conde, this is a detective novel in the classic Padura mould, and highly recommended in Spanish or English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic novel
Verified PurchaseMarvelous book. It relates to the colonial era in Cuba and a young movement of poets trying to create the basis of poetry in the island, meanwhile participating in the emancipation movement from Spain colonialism. It is worth to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars La novela de mi vida
