How do I set up the robot?
Set up is simple. Just unbox, place the dock on a hard-surface floor, at least 4 feet away from stairs with ample space for the robot to navigate in and out. Download the Roomba Home App, follow the prompts and your robot is ready to go.
-
How well does it vacuum?
A great vacuum is more than just power (though this one has180X more suction*). Dual Rubber Brushes and an Edge-Sweeping Brush plow through pet hair, extracting dirt along walls and in corners, and Carpet Boost devours dirt from multiple surfaces
-
How does the AutoEmpty Dock work?
Keep your hands out of dusty messes. This dock takes care of dirt and debris, emptying the robot's bin into an enclosed bag, capturing allergens and particles down to 0.7 microns, holding debris for 75+ days of carefree vacuuming.
-
How does the home mapping work?
ClearVie Pro LiDAR + PrecisionVisio AI Technology scans your home to create up to 5 maps and auto-names rooms in the Roomba Home App. Mapping takes only 8 minutes*, and then your robot is ready to navigate smoothly and avoid obstacles.
-
What kind of maintenance is required?
Perform basic care to keep your robot and dock running smoothly: wipe the robot bin, clean charging contacts, brush-clean, and change the filter every 3-6 months. See the owner's guide for detailed instructions.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 6, 2025Verified PurchaseI have a Roomba 960, an S9+, J9+ and I finally got this 705. I have had them for a few years now, apart from J9+ which I got a year ago. I have always been very happy with the ease of maintenance, iRobots customer support and the easy modular design and ease of repair, which is an anomaly in today’s consumer electronics and appliances.
The 705 with the addition of Lidar maps the whole house much faster, it also doesn’t “bump” into stuff anymore, just steers away or turns around before running into anything. Cleaning performance seems better or at least on par with S9+ which was kinda unparalleled in carpet cleaning. I am glad iRobot launched a new model with their dual rollers.
It is also significantly quieter, and the build quality is the same as before, which is great.
It is a bit taller due to the LiDAR turret, so it couldn’t squeeze itself under my TV cabinet, and the app needs a bit more refining since it’s a brand new app. But the ease with which it signed in with my existing iRobot (classic) app and quickly set up the new robot is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rought 1st run, improved since then
So this is my second robot vacuum - the other being the fantastic Shark PowerDetect, which I've had for almost a year now. Both have their quirks and strengths, and while I think the Powerdetect is probably the better robot vac, I think the Max 705 trades blows with it very, very well. I did have a few issues with it early on, but since then it's been nothing but reliable. I'll talk a little more about some of the issues a little later in the review, for now I wanted to bring up some of the positives.
First things first, setup is very easy. After about 5 minutes of prep, I was ready to start mapping the house, and 30 minutes later I was good to start cleaning. Easy. As for the vacuum itself, I love its simple, elegant look. The multi-textured black plastic with bronze lettering is so minimalist and handsome. It looks so much nicer than any other robot vac available. As for the performance, it has all the nice tech I like to see, Auto-charge, Auto-empty, LIDAR, and a very capable app. One of the things I hate the most about the Shark Powerdetect app is that you can't schedule the vac to clean specific rooms on different days, which is such a dumb restriction. That is not an issue with the Roomba app and I can schedule the Max 705 to clean any room on any day that I want. Love that.
So during my initial testing, I did run into a few issues. I had originally set the robot vacuum to run Friday at noon, so that it would finish by late afternoon, but it ended up running Friday at the stroke of midnight. Now, it's possible that I accidentally selected 12 midnight instead of 12 noon in the app... I doubt I did, but it's always a possibility. You schedule through the app on a 24-hour clock, so I would've had to selected 2400 Thursday or 0000 Friday to get it to run when it did... which again, I doubt I did that. Besides that, I also had a bit of trouble with the app on my first cleaning run. Every time I wanted to open the app to check on the progress of the robot vac, it would bring up the nonexistent breakdown of that midnight run, which I had canceled. I believe this glitch was causing the robot vac to act weird, because during this time, the Max 705 would pause its cleaning run every 10 minutes or so. This would force me to open the app, get rid of the previous run's breakdown, and manually tap to continue the run... which was extremely annoying. That breakdown screen did eventually stop appearing, and the robot vacuum never paused again. So yeah, I'm going to chalk it up to a simple glitch... one that I hope not to see again. Aside from that, I've had no issues with any other cleaning runs.
TLDR - Had a few issues on my initial cleaning run, since then it's been solid. Love the app, features, and minimalist design. 5/5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have a lot to say about robots
I've had enough robots over the last 20 years to know that no robot is perfect. Most are very imperfect despite commanding very high prices.
This iRobot Roomba Max 705 is not perfect either, but it sufficiently impressed me that I am giving it 5 stars. As you can see later in this review, I own and have tested many robots over the last few years. I have had iRobot vacuums since the early 2000s. None of the others have impressed me as much and I'm not sure I've given another 5 stars. Just to be clear, it's not perfect. Even the best robots have miles to go to be as good as a high-end really good stick vacuum; they just don't match them on carpets and especially carpets with lots of dog fur. But you need to operate the stick vacuum and not a robot. That counts for a lot. It does the work without you.
Furthermore, this iRobot Max 705 is just a vacuum, not a vacuum/mop and it's quite expensive, $899 at the moment on 鶹. I think it's extremely good though and can justify the price.
One of the best things about purchasing an iRobot vacuum
Is that you really do get top-of-the-line support. There are few companies that have consistently impressed me over 20+ years. iRobot is one of them. They provide unmatched support, diagnosing many robot issues over the phone by listening to you and the robot. They now also use video. I hadn't had much contact over the last year or two, but over the last week, I did contact them and my previous impressions were just reinforced by the representative and the follow up I received. I can tell you that all the other robot companies' support I've dealt with and I've contacted many (plus Tineco and LG for stick vacuum support) are basically non-existent. They answer your call or respond to emails, but they can't diagnose anything but the most basic problem and most issues are beyond the abilities of the people you can speak to. Email support is its own h*ll. A simple issue with Eufy literally took months and two replacement vacuums because the primary contacts know literally nothing about how the product works and their tech team only responds by email, at most once per night or every other night and often suggesting things that make no sense, but take lots of time and effort. This kind of thing is repeated by so many of the companies selling high end robots. Good support is invaluable and worth paying extra for.
The standout feature of this robot is its precision navigation. I watched it carve a path around each of the dining room chair legs and slide through the small alley between them. It was graceful in a way I haven't seen before.
That said, it did get stuck a few times, but small adjustments or setting "no go" zones resolved the issues.
The robot mapped my open layout space easily and well the first time. That is an accomplishment. I then went in and split and merged spaces into rooms based on how we use the space. That part was a bit tricky. You need to select a room first before you can split or merge it. I didn't realize that at first and my splits failed. I also had some trouble adding furniture to the rooms.
While I think the process should be the same as editing the room layout (splits and merges), it isn't and that makes it unnecessarily difficult and inelegant and definitely a design flaw in an otherwise really nice app. Luckily, it's a very minor feature. Regardless, I have contacted the tech team and am hoping future iterations of the program will make the process smoother.
Setting up "no go" zones was easy though.
The robot can do multiple maps. That's true for many higher end models though often there are issues running mop vacuum robots in non-adjoining spaces like a second floor. I had no issue though bringing this robot downstairs and running it. FYI, I did not move the base.
I find the robot pretty quiet. My older Roombas certainly weren't.
It's a little thing, but the robot has a holder inside the base for an extra bag. That is really nice because when you need one, you don't have to go searching to finish your current job. It's the first time I've seen that.
You can spot clean an area by dragging a finger on the map. I think that's a pretty neat trick. Again, many robots have a relatively easy way to set up a zone, but not this easy.
I've included a photo of my final map. I like the 2D version though there is an option to look at it in 3D. There are lots of options to set up cleaning routines or to just direct the robot to the areas you want when you need it.
Regarding cleaning ... I'm not a professional tester. I don't have a zone set up with food, litter and debris scattered over various surfaces. Unlike other brands, iRobot doesn't publish their suction level (Pa), but I've come to believe that that number doesn't say as much as it should anyway, just as megapixels doesn't tell you whether a camera will take really great photos. What I can say is that it appears to do a very good job. I had no trouble with tangled brushes either. It got close to the edges of things. The navigation between small spaces contributes a great deal because it goes places that my other robots don't. I have several robots with high Pa number but they don't go under the toe kick of my cabinets or they still don't remove the fur off the carpet.
I mentioned earlier that I have a lot of robots. I guess I almost have a mini fleet. While I don't have all the top brands, this is a list of the ones I own including my newest stick vacuums (I own an older Dyson V8 too)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Robot Vacuum
The media could not be loaded.
From the design to function and everything in between, I’m blown away. The Roomba Max 705 is honestly just pretty to even look at. Which I know sounds weird for a vacuum. From there it continues to get better. The app was easy to navigate.
I’ve had other Roomba’s in the past, my most recent is an essentials and the Max 705 blows it out of the proverbial water Nine times out of ten, I’d have to track down my old roomba after it lodged itself somewhere bizarre and remote. After unloading it, it would then proceed to spend the next 30 min of its battery life cleaning the same area over and over while trying to beach itself somewhere else obnoxious.
Not so with the Max 705. It spent about 30 min mapping my first floor. Not once did it wedge itself under my sofa or behind an end table or between the wall and a shoe.
After the initial map, it cleaned for the first time. I normally use my roomba as an “in between” vacuum. We have 3 cats and a dog (animals are my toxic trait). The roomba runs while I clean the kitchen and do other tasks, and then I always follow up with an upright vacuum cleaner. Usually that second upright vacuum yields a pretty full canister.
After the first clean with the Max 705, I did my usual follow up. I hardly picked up anything at all. And what I did pick up, I’d bet one of my fur balls shed AFTER the Max 705 did its job. It’s run consistently over the last week and continues on this impressive path.
I’m blown away at the quality, ease of use and just a job well done. The app allows you to tell it where to vacuum (or not), if you want it to be a regular, quick or deep clean, and perhaps my favorite feature - has a pet guard which disables the buttons on the vacuum itself. One of my cats has a nasty habit of turning our other roomba off if it comes near him.
The price tag is definitely a hefty one but the old adage of getting what you pay for rings true with this purchase. My whole family can see the difference. Even my 10 year old commented on how gentle this one is. “It doesn’t slam into things like our other one!” And she’s right - there’s no awkward banging against cabinets, walls and table legs.
This is an investment but one worth making!
A MarieFantastic Robot Vacuum
Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2025
From the design to function and everything in between, I’m blown away.
4.0 out of 5 stars Mess Avoidance Makes This One
Object avoidance is a game changer for robot vacuums. I have a different one but hardly run it because I also have kids and pets that leave things out and to really get it to clean you have to have a pretty tidy room or give it avoid zones. Not having to deal with all that makes this actually usable on a regular basis.
It's home layout feature works really well and it does a pretty good job kf even pre labeling some of the rooms. It's easy to edit the layout and you can even add furniture if you want. Being able to tell it to just clean certain rooms is easy and useful. The app does require an account to use which I'm bit much of a fan of and it doesn't utilize any other login services like Google which means another login to keep track of. Pausing and resuming cleaning also works super well because it can scan the room and pick up where it left off. Makes it simple if you have to disturb it.
Speaking of disturbing it, the avoidance is good but not perfect. It ran over a sock and got stuck. Just like any other vacuum, it has stuff its not going to like. It'll be obvious as it will get quite loud. It is much louder on flooring than carpet. Hair is always an issue for every vacuum, this one tends to get it wrapped around the sweeper arm, which might look bad at first but it's preferred to the roller because the sweeper pops right off and makes it really easy to pull off whatever is tangled around it. As for it's cleaning job, it's okay. Expect to run it twice for a clean looking floor. Running it regularly will help a lot just a first pass for a dirty floor isn't going to work miracles. Also it ised bags for the disposal, which I'd much rather have just the bin instead of something to replace.
Overall it's a good cleaning bot and good for homes that frequently become unkept. There are still improvements to be had for future robots.
