The Zen Air Phono preamp sounds very good as is, with any arbitrary 5V USB charger one may find around one’s home. But it sounds beyond excellent, and phenomenal for the price, when connected to a 5V USB power bank, like this one: /gp/product/B0869DMJH7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . The sound became immediately significantly better defined and clearer - a highly recommended combination for audio enthusiasts on a budget.

What I do not like is that the in-box supplied power cable is short, two feet, maybe. That should just be long enough in some setups,, but not in general. If you decide to use a power bank in conjunction with the Zen Air Phono, then it introduces an additional cable, additional cable length, and there will like be no problem with the short cable.

I am keeping my Little iFI, and warmly recommend it

Pros: sound quality is lovely. I compared with ifi zen phono amp and I like this air a lot. The zen is too digital from my taste. This unit s building quality is super not cheap at all.
Cons: it came with just a little usb cable other than that is nothing! No power supply! You need use a power bank to lighting it up like I did. From this point ifi is so cheap. They sell the power wall wart separate cost 80 bucks! What?

This unit exceeded my expectations for the price. Not sure why MC input was important at this price as I think audiophiles will opt for a much higher phono preamp. I really do like a subsonic filter as this is a terrific feature ... just leave it on. I also suggest leaving this on all the time .. draws little wattage anyway. This is important, it only comes with a very short USB to DC cable so you will need a USB port somewhere to operate and likely a USB extension cable. I highly recommend a Linear Power Supply (not switching) just make sure the voltage matches and has enough amperage ... do your research if you go this route. Feather light plastic garbage. No power supply but has a proprietary USB cable with USB A on one end and a barrel jack at the other. What is this, an apple product? Needs turned on with the push of a button every time after a power disconnect. Even though I am returning this, I am happy I bought it, because I am buying 2 other higher end phono amps, and I can now avoid this brand. I am getting pro-ject and schiit for my 2 higher end amps, and maybe I will try fosi for the low end one. Yup, fosi. I recommend fosi over ifi. I am done with ifi. They seem aggressive with their e waste, i mean audio products.

I was using the built-in preamp in my turntable and I thought it sounded fine. I didn’t realize how much I was missing. I unboxed it and put Rush-2112 on and it sounded like the musicians were in front of me. The clarity and detail is amazing. I also picked up the Ifi linear power supply to go along with it to reduce noise. Some complaints are that it comes with a short USB cable, which is another reason why I got the linear power supply, and recommend it to buyers. Also, there are no gain or load adjustment options so you’re stuck with what it offers. It still sounds great to me and is perfect for beginners, but for someone who wants to adjust settings, I would look elsewhere. This is by far the best preamp in the budget category.

I bought iFi ZEN Air Phono to replace Rega Fono Mini A2D. They are both high quality pre-amps from audiophile brands in budget friendly price bracket.

I didn't find many comparisons online between them so I decided to write this review. Also there aren't many reviews on ZEN Phono Air. ZEN Phono model has more reviews which in general are favourable. Rega Fono Mini A2D has been What Hi-Fi? recommendation for years, that's what affected in my decision to get Rega few years ago.

Sound profiles in these pre-amps are completely different. Rega sounds very warm and bass heavy, sound signature is more analogue. Bass sounds almost too boomy in certain records and makes rest of the details in music hard to hear. ZEN Air Phono is much brighter, clearer and detailed, more analytical. Bass is controlled, not overpowering. I assume this depends which you prefer and what is your setup. For my setup, B&O Beogram RX2 turntable and rebuilt MMC4 cartridge, Air Phono is much better.

ZEN AIR Phono design is more modern and looks much better. It is bigger in size though. Rega is just plain metal box. ZEN is something you could leave for display as part of your setup, Rega is something you want to hide behind a cabinet. I found grounding cable hard to attach to Rega, you might need screwdriver in fact. In ZEN you just attach it back of the panel and use the knob to tighten it in place.

Rega has USB connection if you want to transfer your records to digital format. I don't need this functionality but keep this in mind if you want to digitazise your collection.

ZEN supports both MC and MM cartridges but I think this would be too budget option for anyone using moving coil cartridge. Nice feature still.

ZEN also has subsonic filter which you can turn on or off. Filter is supposed to reduce noise caused by warped records. I found this feature to make sound more muffled when turned on. Might be good if you have really badly warped record and need to use it every now and then. By default I would suggest to turn it off.

Purpose of this review isn't to say that Rega is by any means bad option to go for. In my opinion ZEN is just better sounding and also better value for money. ZEN is currently £90 in �鶹��, Rega's RRP is £120.

Hope this review helps someone to choose between these two pre-amps.
