On Democracies and Death Cults: Israel and the Future of Civilization

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
In his travels through Israel and Gaza, #1 International Bestselling author Douglas Murray has seen the best and the worst humanity has to offer, and he has no trouble choosing a side.
Murray is not Jewish and before October 7, he had never lived in Israel. However, he objects to being lied to, and Israel has been on the receiving end of the biggest, deepest, longest lies in history.
Israel's commitment to fundamental Western values—capitalism, individual rights, democracy, and reason—has made it a beacon of progress in a region dominated by authoritarianism and extremism. Israel’s principles vividly contrast with the ideology of Hamas, which openly proclaims its love of death over life. With incisive moral clarity, On Democracies and Death Cults exposes how the campus left and international establishment confuse this conflict by:
- Calling on Israel for restraint and proportionality, while Hamas commits genocide.
- Slandering Israelis as white colonialists, while only a third of Israelis are Jews of European ancestry.
- Framing the conflict as oppressor vs. oppressed, when it is really between a thriving multi-ethnic democracy and a death cult bent on its annihilation.
Drawing from intensive on-the-ground reporting in Israel, Gaza, and Lebanon, Douglas Murray places the latest violence in its proper historical context. He takes listeners on a harrowing journey through the aftermath of the October 7 massacre, piecing together the exclusive accounts from victims, survivors, and even the terrorists responsible for the atrocities. If left unchecked, misplaced sympathy could embolden forces that seek to undermine not only Israel, but all of Western civilization.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 13, 2025Verified Purchase*Death Cults and Democracies* is one of the most profound and unsettling books I’ve read in years. Equal parts historical analysis, political commentary, and psychological deep-dive, this book explores the dark undercurrents that shape modern societies—and the terrifying ways in which ideology, extremism, and charismatic leadership can weaponize belief in even the most "civilized" democracies.
Douglas Murray delivers yet again with razor-sharp prose, fearless insight, and intellectual clarity that cuts through noise and narrative. He doesn’t just catalog the horrors of cult-like thinking—whether in politics, religion, or conspiracy culture—but carefully traces how democracies can be seduced and subverted by it. Drawing on chilling case studies from across history and around the world, this book shows how cultic devotion to leaders or causes can erode institutions, suppress dissent, and normalize violence—all while hiding behind the veil of legitimacy.
What sets this book apart is its courage. Murray doesn’t pander or placate—he challenges. His ability to dissect complex issues without sacrificing nuance is a rare gift in today’s polarized discourse. It’s not just about “those people” or “those regimes”—it’s about how *any* democracy, including our own, can be vulnerable.
By the end, I was left with a mix of awe, dread, and determination. *Death Cults and Democracies* isn’t just a book—it’s a warning, and one we should all take seriously. Douglas Murray has written a must-read for anyone who cares about truth, liberty, and the fragile state of modern civilization.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 25, 2025Verified PurchaseIn this book, Douglas Murray, as an investigative journalist, takes you on a vivid journey of the terrible events that transpired on October 7, 2023, in southern Israel, as Hamas terrorists invaded Israel and killed over a thousand innocent people on one of the darkest days in Israel’s history. He also discusses how the world had turned a blind eye and actually sympathized with Hamas in one of the most perplexing and disturbing shifts in global moral judgment, revealing how deep-rooted biases and political agendas have clouded the ability of many to condemn clear acts of brutality. As part of Mr. Murray's research, he retells the stories of the families who experienced the tragedy firsthand, as well as their bravery in the face of the worst barbarism ever experienced by Jews, that was filmed and posted on social media. Although I would describe parts of this book as very chilling and profoundly sad, I think it is an important read for anyone who is interested in getting a better sense of the Israel-Gaza conflict from someone who reported from that region for many years.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 1, 2025Verified PurchaseI just finished reading Murray's last offering, I have to admit that this book like The Strange Death of Europe and The War on the West will probably leave a lasting impression on me not just for the sheer horror of the subject but also for the astonishing dementia and hypocrisy of a large segment of the western society. Most have an opinion about the conflict in Gaza but no other that I know of has the first hand experience that Douglas has. This book should be mandatory reading in all education institution in the western world but don't fret it won't: it is way too much against the current ideology.
Kudos Mr Murray and thank you for a great book.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 30, 2025Verified PurchaseThis book should be required reading for every high school student in Canada and around the world. More important, every political leader in the West must read it, too.
Douglas Murray's riveting book is a masterpiece of journalism and in-depth research. He traveled extensively around Gaza, Israel, Lebanon and the West Bank, interviewing countless people — from IDF soldiers to Hamas terrorists. The most moving parts of the book are the accounts of the survivors of the worst massacre of the Jews since the Holocaust.
Murray also incisively exposes the hypocrisy of Western leaders and many university students on campus. Not only is Murray's reportage a searing investigation into antisemitism but ultimately an inspiring account of the triumph of Jewish resilience and the Jews' love of life.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2025Verified PurchaseSomehow, throughout this gut-wrenching account of one of the most atrocious massacre in history, Douglas Murray manages to give us hope. Thank you.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 22, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is one of the most horrifying books I have ever read. It is horrifying because it is true..and we nneed to be afraid of this cult of death. I have Read all of Mr. Murrays books, I find him to be an honest and thorough Journalist. He has done his homework here. Nothing he has said is untrue and we in the west must be more vigilant.
The horror of October Seventh is described in great detail by a man who was, the day after, going to these sights, seeing the carnage, hearing of the utter depravity of these attcks.
It will not be an easy read, but, if decency is to survive, it is an essential one.
Thank you Douglas Murray.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 21, 2025Verified PurchaseDouglas Murray’s book, On Democracies and Death Cults needs to be required reading for anyone concerned about the future of Western democracies, as well as anyone who wishes to state an opinion on the consequences of October 7th. He clearly has an impressive amount of expertise on these topics and his writing is elegant and thoughtful. In particular, his analysis of the virus of anti-semitism and its shape-shifting throughout history is most enlightening, as is his development of Vasily Grossman’s quote in Life and Fate, “Tell me what you accuse the Jews of – I’ll tell you what you’re guilty of,” Murray brilliantly explicates how this quote is as relevant today as it was during the first half of the twentieth century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding journalist and writer
Verified PurchaseDougla Murray has delivered yet another outstanding piece of work. For its journalistic integrity—one would think that’s a given these days, for its courage—because these days stating the facts, common sense, what’s obviously good and evil makes one vulnerable to all kinds of name-calling and violence. I loved this book for what it confirmed, for the discoveries I made—I ordered Vasily Grossman’s and Gregor Von Rezzori’s books, for giving a name and a voice to the victims and survivors who in some parts of the West chose to silence.
Douglas Murray mentioned Oriana Fallaci and that in itself is testament that who came before us, who was at the lieu of the events (she, like Murray, reported from the war zones not from behind a desk and chunky microphone,) should not only be given a platform surrounded by other journalists, photojournalists and experts but also be joined by those who go to the voting booth. This book made me think about countries and leaders and whether their stance (supporting Israel half-way) are worthy to be re-elected.
This is where Murray’s book shines beyond the facts. It's thought-provoking. It made me think of the past and present and of course the future. He manages to do this with each and every one of his books. There is no back cover, in my view, the words stay with me. No last page. If I have only one criticism, it would have been to include a line or two from Fallaci’s Letter to a Child Never Born. Like Douglas Murray’s latest masterpiece, that book too is about LIFE and Fallaci too saw her share of bloodshed. In the midst of evil, Israel, Douglas Murray, the great war correspondents, journalists have celebrated life.
I have also the audible version and I recommend this too as it's beautifully read by the author himself. Not too fast, just right as if I can see the punctuation. Thank you to Douglas Murray, you’re the voice of reason in this mad world, to your courage. Your work will be one that will be referred to in generations to come. Thank you to the publishers for representing him and for publishing his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!!!!
Verified PurchaseDouglas once again delivers his superb moral clarity throughout this book and does a great job exposing the sobering events of the 7th and of the Western reaction, all backed up by statistics and verified facts throughout the book. He tackles the wider issues of antisemitism and its origins, citing great writers like Vasily Grossman and offers his personal experiences in Israel, Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank. Overall, a great book, very enlightening.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most important read!
Verified PurchaseThere’s propaganda and the truth. This is real description of what happened on Oct 7th and the aftermath. It’s not over yet and it seems it never will be. This book precedes the attack on Iran’s nuclear program but justifies it.
