A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.
In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

The Wedding People was full of the most complex , real , raw characters and so heartfelt, and I never have related so much to a character like Phoebe.
I did this as a buddy read with @thefictionphysician and I am so glad I did this with Melany because no one should ever feel alone . The crazy thing is I’ve never met Melany but the friendship we’ve made on Bookstagram shows you how you can find connections in the most unlikely places if your willing to open your heart ♥️ and for that I am thankful ! So please go check out her page and show her some love 💕 I am so glad you are Here 🫶🏼
“But it is also true that one day she can be alone in a room preparing to die, and the next, she can be preparing to be on a boat with beautiful strangers .”
“Alive,” Gary says “ You struck me as a person who was fully alive . It was inspiring, actually.”
This story as my dear friend pointed out is definitely targeted to a more mature audience aka 40 and up 😜 because of the relatable content with the main character Phoebe.
This book is heavily weighted on mental illness and suicide but with threads of humour and sensitive touches dusted through out the story and about new beginnings and finding strength in ourselves and others .
If your looking for a heartfelt read that is beautifully written then I HIGHLY recommend The Wedding People it’s filled with Unlikeable characters that the author made me feel sorry for them at times and characters you will love and be filled with so many emotions you’ll feel like a yo-yo at times and you’ll be so glad to be here ❤️

- Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2025Verified Purchase4.5 because I can’t bare the thought of not having a 5 star to hunt down, but this book came close. Lovely characters, easy plot and still so enjoyable to read!
- Reviewed in Canada on July 12, 2025Verified PurchaseDelightful! Funny. Thoughtful. I had such a lovely time at this wedding. Espach has managed to make bridzilla sympathetic. Did I mention funny and throughtful?
- Reviewed in Canada on March 18, 2025Verified PurchaseThe beginning of this book scared me. It starts out so unusual that I really worried about what I got myself into. But stick it out. I promise it’s worth it.
The Wedding People is a narrative about the connections you make in life, and how these interactions can transform you. How you can talk to a stranger for a minute and that conversation can become so important to you, while you’ve had friends for years, and you don’t really feel like you can be honest with them. You don’t trust that they’ll accept you; even though they’ve always been around.
I have felt like Phoebe before, in so many ways, and there are days that I still feel like her. That I put on this mask for people around me, and I’m never quite sure who I am in the deepest parts of myself. But there are glimmers in time that break through the fog and make a person so indescribably happy, that you know the real you is peeking through.
This story is about love and loss, family and friends, and all of the messy parts that go along with it.
It really is a beautiful read.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 19, 2025Verified PurchaseSuch a lovely book, the kind you accidentally devour in a single sitting. I didn't really have better things to do than join Phoebe as she figures out how one truly lives.

“There is no such thing as a happy place. Because when you are happy, everywhere is a happy place. And when you are sad, everywhere is a sad place.”
It’s been a hot minute since I read a book that wasn’t a romance one, but this one didn’t disappoint.
Phoebe Stone wants to kill herself. She’s made a plan, one where she flies out to Cornwall Inn in Newport, Rhode Island and books one of the best suites. She’s lived her whole life trying to fit into a box formed by others — her dad, her ex-husband and all of her coworkers. She’s accepted she can’t have kids, her husband had an affair with one of their closest friends and she has no one. Even her cat died. But when she gets to the Cornwall Inn she realizes the whole place has been booked for a wedding. When she’s ridiculously blunt to Lila, the bride, she slowly gets roped into more and more things. How can someone just change their mind and find the will to live?
I reaallyyyy liked this book. I feel guilty for the four times I told Libby to give it to someone else before me because why did I do that? The writing is brilliant, the characters are so relatable and feel sincere and the storyline is something I have never read before. Definitely going to be looking into more of Alison Espach’s books!

Having just come out of a breakup myself, this book had me crying on the couch on multiple evenings.
But, I think a powerful reminder that even in the throws of depression, even when you are ready to give up and the prospect of 'endless opportunities and freedom' is evermore daunting than encouraging, there doesn't have to be a 'happy ending' there just has to be the potential for another day.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 16, 2025Verified PurchaseThis was a great read! I have literally never read a novel before and was thrown off by the fact that there are no chapters or a table of contents and needed to ask ChatGPT for advice on how to read such a book.
The advice given was to avoid reading it to extract information, but to rather immerse myself in the story and attempt to feel what the characters were feeling. Reading this was an exercise in experiencing empathy and compassion, rather than learning something as I typically do with self-help or business/finance books.
This book was a great introduction to the genre and I will look to read more just like it in future.
