The Wedding People: A Novel Kindle Edition
鶹
The runaway New York Times bestseller
A Today Show #ReadwithJenna Book Club Pick, New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, and a #1 Indie Next Pick
Named a Best Book of the Year by The Guardian, Time, Chicago Tribune Biblioracle, HuffPost, US Magazine, Elle, Real Simple, and Glamour
A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She’s immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.
In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

Review
One of The Washington Post’s 10 Noteworthy Books for July and August
Named a Best Book of Summer 2024 by People Magazine, Bustle, Star Tribune, Goodreads, and LitHub
“The Wedding People is the perfect book to wrap up your summer reading. . . . heartwarming [and] hilarious.”
―Jenna Bush Hager, The Today Show's #ReadwithJenna
“A collision of diametrically opposed life events and general drama, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Maggie Shipstead’s Seating Arrangements. . . . Espach has an eye for the full gamut of emotions that go hand in hand with lifelong commitment, from humor to self-involvement to pathos.”
―Elisabeth Egan, The New York Times Book Review
“Espach’s wit and warmth deliver a gratifying story about how people who have given up might find a reason to start caring again.”
―Becky Meloan, The Washington Post
“Deeply satisfying. . . . A story of what it means to lift oneself out of one life and into another through acts of individual will and fellowship with others. . . . Espach is now three for three on delivering funny, emotionally moving explorations of the difficulties people have in being themselves.”
―John Warner, Chicago Tribune
“A feel-good testament to the life-altering magic of chance meetings.”
―People
“Deceptively complex...Espach’s story of a life-changing chance encounter is as rewarding as it is unexpected.”
―Lucy Feldman, Time
“A refreshingly sharp and funny examination of loss, love and wrestling with the expectations we have for our lives. This book is the rare lush escape that avoids falling into predictability; the characters feel full and real, and offer genuine moments of insight and warmth amidst their quirky circumstances.”
―Jillian Capewell, HuffPost
“Espach thumbs the depths of emotions most of us would fear speaking aloud, not to mention pour out on the page. It's honest, wry and delightfully unpredictable.”
―Anna Kaufman, USA Today
“Full of witty dialogue and lovably imperfect characters you’ll root for till the end.”
―Real Simple
“They say a good actor can read a phone book and still keep an audience spellbound. Alison Espach is that kind of writer. She is a master of taking the seemingly mundane and creating moments that transfix.”
―Maren Longbella, Star Tribune
“Filled with hilarious scenes and brilliant banter.”
―Marion Winik, Newsday
“By deftly invoking many popular romantic comedy tropes, Espach fills this novel with champagne-tinged fizz, while never losing sight of the more sober emotional truths that kicked off her narrative.”
―Bustle
“It’s simply delightful, entertaining, and heartfelt.”
―Stephanie McNeal, Glamour
“T: Eleanor Oliphant and Meredith, Alone vibes. As of this writing, The Wedding People is my favorite book of 2024.”
―Isabelle Eyman, Camille Styles
“Witty dialogue is just a bonus in this engrossing read centering on complex women making life-changing decisions. Recommend to readers who enjoy Sally Rooney, Curtis Sittenfeld, or Elizabeth Berg.”
―Library Journal (starred review)
“The Wedding People is so much more than a funny story (though it is very funny). Espach has penned a keenly observed novel about depression, love, the ways women make themselves small, and how one woman got over it. Fully realized and completely memorable.”
―Booklist (starred review)
“Sparkling . . . Readers are in for a treat.”
―Publishers Weekly
“The Wedding People is a wickedly funny and deeply satisfying novel about a woman with nothing to lose, armed with a green dress, some chocolate wine, and a coconut pillow, cut loose to cause delightful mayhem. It’s a story of lovers who turn into strangers, strangers who turn into friends, and the weird and wonderful connections that make us feel truly alive. I loved it.”
―Jenny Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Pineapple Street
“The Wedding People is my very favorite kind of novel―hilarious and witty with enormous heart and characters I fell in love with. I was delighted to be at this wedding, in the middle of the drama and gossip, watching the entanglements of friendships old and new. I haven’t stopped talking about this book since I finished it, and I won’t stop until I’ve made everyone I know read it . . . so read it! Now! You can thank me later.”
―Jennifer Close, bestselling author of Marrying the Ketchups
“Alison Espach! How does she do it? I mean, really―how? The Wedding People is so utterly, ringingly true it feels less like fiction than like a field guide to personhood. It's so funny and romantic that I sometimes laughed out loud and sometimes got actual goosebumps. I tore through it like I didn't have a disordered deficit of attention. It's a perfect novel. I loved it.”
―Catherine Newman, author of Sandwich

The Wedding People was full of the most complex , real , raw characters and so heartfelt, and I never have related so much to a character like Phoebe.
I did this as a buddy read with @thefictionphysician and I am so glad I did this with Melany because no one should ever feel alone . The crazy thing is I’ve never met Melany but the friendship we’ve made on Bookstagram shows you how you can find connections in the most unlikely places if your willing to open your heart ♥️ and for that I am thankful ! So please go check out her page and show her some love 💕 I am so glad you are Here 🫶🏼
“But it is also true that one day she can be alone in a room preparing to die, and the next, she can be preparing to be on a boat with beautiful strangers .”
“Alive,” Gary says “ You struck me as a person who was fully alive . It was inspiring, actually.”
This story as my dear friend pointed out is definitely targeted to a more mature audience aka 40 and up 😜 because of the relatable content with the main character Phoebe.
This book is heavily weighted on mental illness and suicide but with threads of humour and sensitive touches dusted through out the story and about new beginnings and finding strength in ourselves and others .
If your looking for a heartfelt read that is beautifully written then I HIGHLY recommend The Wedding People it’s filled with Unlikeable characters that the author made me feel sorry for them at times and characters you will love and be filled with so many emotions you’ll feel like a yo-yo at times and you’ll be so glad to be here ❤️

- Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2025Verified Purchase4.5 because I can’t bare the thought of not having a 5 star to hunt down, but this book came close. Lovely characters, easy plot and still so enjoyable to read!
- Reviewed in Canada on July 12, 2025Verified PurchaseDelightful! Funny. Thoughtful. I had such a lovely time at this wedding. Espach has managed to make bridzilla sympathetic. Did I mention funny and throughtful?
- Reviewed in Canada on July 26, 2025Verified PurchaseA little slow start but then I was hooked. Alone or lonely? Normal or special? Being yourself or being what’s expected? Who decides? And how does one know? So many questions, so many great discussions. Read and enjoy!!!
- Reviewed in Canada on July 30, 2025Verified PurchaseIt’s good, but kind of slow. Not a page turner for me, but still enjoyable.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is a thought provoking story about people making decisions, and the consequences. A lot of average person fantasy about having enough money to fulfill your dreams. This book is a beautifully written blueprint for concidering how you want to live your own life.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 18, 2025Verified PurchaseThe beginning of this book scared me. It starts out so unusual that I really worried about what I got myself into. But stick it out. I promise it’s worth it.
The Wedding People is a narrative about the connections you make in life, and how these interactions can transform you. How you can talk to a stranger for a minute and that conversation can become so important to you, while you’ve had friends for years, and you don’t really feel like you can be honest with them. You don’t trust that they’ll accept you; even though they’ve always been around.
I have felt like Phoebe before, in so many ways, and there are days that I still feel like her. That I put on this mask for people around me, and I’m never quite sure who I am in the deepest parts of myself. But there are glimmers in time that break through the fog and make a person so indescribably happy, that you know the real you is peeking through.
This story is about love and loss, family and friends, and all of the messy parts that go along with it.
It really is a beautiful read.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2025Verified PurchaseAlison captured such raw real feelings and moments in life that nobody seems to talk about yet everyone feels and so many experience...like grief, depression, suicide, and fear. She was able to make the story so quick and witty and funny! Amazing.

Phoebe, Lila and Gary were perfectly imperfect characters, just like we all are, and that’s why I enjoyed this book so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Five-Star Must-Read: A Book That Captures the Heart and Soul
Verified PurchaseSometimes, a book comes along that sweeps you up, keeps you hooked, and leaves an imprint on your heart long after you've turned the final page. This was one of those books for me—an absolute five-star read.
At its core, this story follows a protagonist stuck in the monotony of a life that feels suffocating. When her husband leaves her for another woman, it only deepens the despair she’s been grappling with. With no sense of direction and hope slipping through her fingers, she checks into a hotel, intending for it to be her last stop. However, fate has other plans. Due to a double booking, she finds herself the only guest outside of a wedding party set to celebrate throughout the week, and this unexpected twist sets the stage for something truly transformative.
What makes this book so special isn't just the unique premise—though that alone is compelling—but the way it weaves together self-discovery, romance, and emotional depth in a way that feels both profound and refreshingly natural. The romance here is beautifully done—authentic, non-cringey, and honestly one of the best I’ve ever read. Alongside love, the novel explores heavy themes, yet handles them with sensitivity and care, ensuring the reader experiences the rawness of emotion without it feeling overwhelming.
The characters? Absolutely delightful. Phoebe and Juice, in particular, were standout gems, crafted with depth and warmth that made them feel wholly real. They brought levity, humor, and heart into moments that could have otherwise been unbearably heavy. There were hilarious moments sprinkled throughout, adding a perfect balance to the novel’s serious undertones.
Reading this book felt cinematic—it truly needs to be adapted into a film because it would be incredible to see its magic unfold on screen. More than anything, this story resonated deeply with me, reminding me of my own dark moments and the hope that carried me through. It’s rare to come across a book that moves you so completely, but this was exactly that.
I wholeheartedly loved this story and urge everyone to read it. It’s moving, reflective, challenging, and incredibly well-written. A book that will stick with you, reminding you of the power of resilience, love, and unexpected second chances.
