Six summers to fall in love. One moment to fall apart. A weekend to get it right.
They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of spending summers in cottage country, on the glittering lakeshore of her childhood, she stays in a stylish apartment in Toronto, keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart.
Until Percy receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek—the man she never thought she’d have to live without.
For six summers during their youth, through hazy afternoons on the water and warm nights working in his family’s restaurant, Percy and Sam had been inseparable. And when Percy returns to the lake, their connection is as undeniable as it had always been. But until she can confront the decisions she made, they’ll never know whether their love is bigger than the biggest mistakes of their past.
Told over the course of six years in the past and one weekend in the present, Every Summer After is a gorgeously romantic look at love and the people and choices that mark us forever.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 13, 2022Verified PurchaseThis was hands-down a fabulous summer read for me, and I knew it would be based on the premise and location alone. After about halfway down the second page, I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down. Reading it was like coming home. I love stories that pull on the heartstrings and let me tell you… this one did not disappoint. I’m an Ontario gal and this story takes place in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, not too far from me or from where I grew up camping and cottaging in the summers on gorgeous lakes in the Canadian Shield area. There’s just something about driving up north on your way to these beautiful places that sets your mind at ease. That certain place where the highway turns from a ridiculously busy six lanes north of Toronto to a double lane, twinned highway. The landscape changes drastically from hydro towers and pavement to trees and rivers. It’s bumper-to-bumper traffic to smooth sailing in no time at all. The air is cleaner, the sky is bluer, the lakes are shimmering, and all your troubles just melt away. It’s such a precise spot that this happens, it’s as though you cross an invisible line, and your chest gets a little lighter when you cross it.
When Fortune writes about what it’s like in Barry’s Bay, living the summers on the lake, there’s so much nostalgia on the pages for me! Between that and the one-that-got-away-that-you-never-truly-get-over vibes, I was absolutely hooked. There were so many lines in the book that resonated so deeply with me for so many reasons. There were several “pause pebbles” in the story for me, which Cece Lyra (P.S. Literary agent) will know all about; those “wow” lines that make you stop reading to reflect; the ones that hit you in the feels and blow your mind a little bit (or a lot!). (And as a writer, these are the only times you want your reader to stop reading!) It was like Fortune peered inside all my most precious personal memories, fears, hopes, and wishes and wrote them on the page in the most perfect way. Reading this story was like opening a memory box, and I want to read it again and again.
I had some travelling to do, so I read half the book on the planes and in the airports. The only reason I put it down was that I was forced to by boarding/de-boarding, having to walk from gate to gate, and driving home at 3am! I couldn’t wait to keep reading, and by the second day, I’d finished it. I love the way the author holds the tension, keeps us guessing at what happened in the past that affects the present so much, and leads us down memory lane. Even if you didn’t grow up going to a cottage every summer, there’s still so much about childhood and growing up, finding yourself and building relationships, that can resonate with you. It’s a little bit women’s fiction, a little bit coming-of-age, a little bit romance (with a few steamy scenes!), and all incredibly written from start to finish.
This was an excellent, 5-star debut, and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 15, 2023Verified PurchasePercy (Persephone) created wonderful memories in Barry's Bay as a teen. Six amazing summers filled with adventure, friendship, and romance, but that all changed when she made the BIGGEST mistake of her life. The memories from Barry's Bay continue to haunt her.
Now, living in Toronto, she receives an unexpected phone call from an old friend. News that sends her racing back to Barry's Bay, back to the past, back to face her mistakes, and to come face to face with Sam - the man who holds her heart and that she has never been able to forget.
How will seeing Sam again affect Percy? Will the mistakes of the past cause chaos for the future? Will Percy be able to let Sam go and move on with her life, or will seeing him draw all the feelings up from the past?
My Review:
Carley Fortune created a slow-burn romantic love story that continued to draw me in page after page. Every Summer After flowed so nicely, I read it in one afternoon/evening.
The characters and storyline were extremely relatable and realistic. The tension and build of Percy and Sam's friendship and romantic relationship were felt in my gut and chest.
I absolutely loved that Carley Fortune based the book in Canada. Being from Ontario myself, I was able to place myself in some exact locations due to hearing familiar city names and "Timmy's" references.
Every Summer After was written in such a brilliant way, anyone would be able to place themselves into the character's shoes. The chapters went from Now and Then which blended the end of one chapter to the next smoothly.
This was my first read by Carley Fortune and definitely will not be the last. I have already started "Meet Me at the Lake."
- Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2022Verified PurchaseThis book was the perfect read for my summer vacation. Every Summer After was high on my to-be-read list, and I couldn’t have picked a better time to dive in.
I think it’s safe to say that many of us probably have fond memories of the summer months from our youths. Whether it was going on camping trips, staying in a cottage, or going to summer camp, we often made special friends that we only saw during the summer. We may have kept in touch throughout the year as pen pals (I may be aging myself) or with the occasional phone call, but these were the summer friends that we looked forward to getting reacquainted with every year.
Every Summer After was filled with nostalgia from those years gone by. I loved how the author tapped into those familiar feelings and emotions. The story is told in alternating chapters from the present to the past. We get introduced to Persephone (Percy) as an adult, living in the big city, maneuvering through life by keeping people at a safe distance. When she receives a phone call that sends her back to Barry’s Bay, back to the next-door neighbors she spent her summers with, it brings back all of the good times and the heartache along with it.
The story is told entirely from Percy’s perspective, and I couldn’t have been happier. I got to live out those summer months with her, seeing her develop a close friendship with Sam Florek, and then as time went by, I witnessed their friendship grow into something more. I could feel all of the tension, teenage angst, and butterflies as if I had been living through it myself.
With each chapter, I knew that I was getting closer to discovering what had torn Percy and Sam’s relationship apart, and I was riveted to the pages, my mind filling with different theories and scenarios as to why everything fell apart. While I was anxious to learn the reason, I was also dreading getting to the end of the book and bidding farewell to these characters and their beloved lakeshore.
Every Summer After was a wonderful debut novel. It filled me with nostalgia, made me fall in love, shattered my heart, and ruined me in the best possible way. I can’t wait to read more books by Carley Fortune in the near future. Every Summer After will definitely be gracing my list of favorite books of 2022!

5.0 out of 5 stars Condition of the book:
Verified PurchaseThe book came with an almost perfect condition without any breakage found. The quality of the pages was really impressive . The printing of the cover was fine and not so dull. The book was an impressive add to my collective at a pretty condition
Review of the novel: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
If you're looking for a small town romance with a glimpse of innocence, this book is the one. I bought it without having much knowledge of the storyline, and was pretty impressed afterwards. I had originally expected it to be a city romance with busy lives, but with the nature of the characters, Sam Percy and Charlie, small town fitted them so well and i wouldn't want it any other way. The character building as they grew older was so strong and inspiring. It's a second chance romance (my first one) and portrayed a very true and realistic friendship even after they've drifted apart. It's nostalgic, intense, and an escape fro the busy lives of big cities, even in the book! The lake and the nature is portrayed very nicely in the book and the entire novel is from the perspective of Percy. It's the kind of writing style that makes you feel and highly aware that you're reading a book rather than reading someone's personal diary; which was kind of difficult at first. So if that works just fine for you, go for it! You'd feel alot - deep effection for the characters and their choices - when you finish the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read
Verified PurchaseEvery Summer After gave me everything I wanted in a summer read. The nostalgic vibes were so real that I felt like I was living the story myself. The nonlinear timeline was perfectly done, capturing both the innocence and the complexity of youth & friendships. It explores the struggle of navigating relationships in your teenage years as well as in your 30s & how some bonds take hard work and are worth it especially when they are the one for you. I loved both characters in this relationship and I could relate to both of them, deepening my reading experience. The yearning in this story was raw and real, pulling at my heartstrings. There’s definitely some steamy moments yet it’s balanced with a fun, wholesome energy & summer vibes at the lake. It's lighthearted yet emotionally charged, making it a truly satisfying read.
