What Is Adaptive Content?

Adaptive Content improves the home screen content on your Echo device depending on your distance from the device.

Adaptive Content on your Echo Show device uses Computer Vision, and in some cases Presence Detection to adjust the on-screen display based on how close you're to the device. When you're close to the device, the content on the home screen changes to provide more detail. When you're farther away, the display changes to be more easily viewed from a distance.

Adaptive Content also uses your device's camera to detect the proximity of a person, but isn’t used to identify a person. Images used for Adaptive Content are processed locally and not sent to the cloud.

Adaptive Content is an optional setting and is turned on by default. For steps to turn it on or off, go to Turn Adaptive Content On or Off.

For many devices, your device doesn't support Adaptive Content if you disable the camera, close the camera's shutter, or press the Microphones & Camera Enable/Disable button.

You can use the camera shutter and/or the Microphones & Camera Enable/Disable button to temporarily turn off Adaptive Content.

Note: Adaptive Content continues to work on the following devices with the camera disabled through Presence Detection:
  • Echo Show 8 (2025 release)
  • Echo Show 11 (2025 release)

To turn off Presence Detection, visit our help page Turn Presence Detection Off or On with Your Echo Show 8 (2025 release) or Echo Show 11 (2025 release).
