Dolby Atmos or Surround Sound Not Working on Fire TV Devices

To troubleshoot issues with Dolby Atmos or surround sound, use the Audio and Video Diagnostics tool on your Fire TV device.

Note: The Audio and Video Diagnostics tool isn’t available on all Fire TV devices.

  1. Check that your equipment supports the audio format you're trying to use. To check supported audio settings, use the Audio and Video Diagnostics tool on your Fire TV device:
    1. Go to Settings on your Fire TV device.
    2. Select Display & Audio
    3. Select Audio/Video Diagnostics to display supported settings.
  2. If the audio format you want to use is detected, but you're not getting that format from the content you're streaming:
    1. Use the test video at the bottom of the page to confirm that your equipment setup supports surround sound.
    2. Check that the content supports surround sound.
  3. If the audio format you want to use isn’t detected, it can’t be played with your current equipment setup:
    1. Make sure that your equipment supports surround sound and is set up correctly. Some AVRs will require height speakers for Atmos support. Check the user manual that came with your devices or contact the manufacturer for more help.
    2. Make sure that you’re using a high-speed HDMI cable. Optical cables don’t fully support surround sound.
    3. Connect your Fire TV device directly to the HDMI input on your soundbar or AV receiver. You can use another HDMI cable to connect your soundbar or AV receiver to the HDMI ARC input on your TV.
    4. Change your audio format to a lower setting. Go to Settings on your Fire TV device and then Display & Audio.
