Have watched parts of new version of Shogun and this film stands up to recent new version. Richard Chamberlain is excellent as Blackthorn pilot of vessel that lands in Japanese waters. He and his crew are taken prisoner and they find that they are not highly valued. There are a lot of dangerous disputes among the Japanese. Lord Toronaga played by Toshiro Mifune is one rival for power. The Franciscan monks speak Japanese and have a lot of power. John Rhys Davies (Harrison Ford) is a pilot who befriends Chamberlain and speaks Japanese. Chamberlain falls in love with a married woman whose husband is a powerful lord to Mifune. Chamberlain would love to capture the Black Ship which carries treasure to Macau. Chamberlain learns Japanese and gradually gains the trust of Lord Toronaga. There are 5 discs, last disc is the making of Shogun and cast detail the making of this film. Apparently Orson Welles did the narration. There was a lot of difficulty in making the film, hot humid weather and no air conditioning. Toho studios was about 20 years behind in making films with their technology. The film set of the small village was late destroyed in a typhoon just after the film was finished. The costumes were all hand made and Chamberlain's were custom made of silk and were beautiful. Many translators were hired and there was many difficulties in translation to the extras. Highly recommended movie and one of Chamberlain's best.
