Doesn't brown the bread to make toast, just makes it melba toast!

Even after following the instructions in the manual, making toast is impossible because the bread doesn't get toasted (brown on top and bottom) properly. It just becomes melba toast, crispy throughout. Replaced it with a Master Chef model which works much better.
