  This dog takes 3 x AAA batteries (not included). You can use the dog with or without the leash.
  
  Without the leash, you can pat the dog and it will bark and walk. I believe as long the dog feels some sort of shake or movement then it will activate.
  
  With the leash, you just press or hold the button on the handle. Patting the dog doesn't seem to work anymore (unless I was doing something wrong). The instructions say to make the dog bark you just press and let go of the button. To make the dog walk you have to hold the button down. When I hold the button down most of the time the dog just barks. It doesn't seem to detect properly when I'm holding the button down.
  
  The dog will detect when you hold the bone to it's mouth. It will imitate eating, barking, and sitting down.
  
  The fur is pretty soft and nice to touch.
  
  I can definitely recommend this dog toy but I feel that the dog works better without the leash.
