This graphic novel is one of the most intense and complex I have read. Beaton manages to tell her story with subtle compassion and earnestness鈥et it comes across as entirely courageous.
Not all of it is pretty - most vignettes will make you cringe and force you to wonder: what sacrifices would you make for the Canadian Dream?
I read it in one sitting because I couldn鈥檛 put it down. I can tell this story is going to haunt me (in a good way) for a long time. I鈥檓 already excited to re-read it.
As a long-time fan of everything Beaton has drawn, it鈥檚 entirely satisfying to engulf this masterpiece. It will hold a solid spot in Canadian literature, I鈥檓 sure.
