Bought this as it was on sale, and always wanted the first movie on bluray. The story is still as touching as it was when I first watched it more than 10 years ago, and that alone makes it worth the buy. I'm also a fan of steelbooks and this one is beautifully done. But it is not perfect, and there are some minor things for me which prevent it from getting a 5 star from me - for others, it may make or break the deal, and they should know before buying this.
I should also make it clear that I've only watched the first disk, and the criticisms that follows may not apply to the other two. Never found the second or third as epic or touching as the first so didn't feel the need to revisit them.
Cons: - Contrary to the product description, the only language is English, and there are no subtitles. Have no idea why they put language as Japanese as it's nowhere to be seen. - It is a very barebone product. In fact on the menu there are only two options: play, and scene selection. No options for subtitles as none exists, and no special features which I found slightly disappointing. - While it is now on bluray, this remastering is only partial. Many scenes, perhaps due to technical difficulties, remain rather low res.
At the end of the day, it all depends on what this series and the movies included really mean to you, and this is subjective. For me, the first movie alone justified buying it, even though I didn't like the second or third that much.
