I really wanted to like the Garmin Drive 53 and gave it a thorough test, but unfortunately, it didn鈥檛 meet my expectations and I鈥檒l be returning it. I purchased the unit a couple of weeks ago and updated both the firmware and maps right away. My main reason for buying a new GPS was to replace my reliable but aging 7-year-old unit from a different brand (no longer available in Canada), which has become very slow to acquire satellite signals鈥攐ften leaving me driving blind for several minutes. In contrast, the Garmin 53 connects within seconds, which is a big plus. I tested it on a road trip from New Brunswick through Quebec to Northern Ontario. By the fourth day, I gave up and switched back to my old GPS. Here鈥檚 why: Lane guidance is often incorrect or confusing. Turn notifications are given too early. For example, instead of saying 鈥淟eft turn in 300 metres鈥 like my old GPS, the Garmin simply says 鈥淭urn left,鈥 forcing me to glance at the screen to figure out when. Pronunciation of road names鈥攅specially in French鈥攊s poor. In some cases, it's complete gibberish, again requiring me to look at the screen to understand what road it's referring to. Map views are limited. Of the three available, 3D is the most useful, but it鈥檚 zoomed out too far and lacks the detail I need, such as side roads. Search functionality is weak. The unit often can't find a city or town unless I input a full street address, and there's no 鈥淐ity Centre鈥 option. Postal code lookup also never worked. In the end, I found myself spending more time trying to work around the Garmin鈥檚 limitations than just using it to get where I needed to go. I'm disappointed, and unfortunately, it's going back.
