I was very happy with this scanner that I bought in June 2022 and scanned about 30 rolls of colour and b&w film. Although it鈥檚 very slow, it produces decent images 鈥 or it did. I started to get digital artifacts or errors in the images.
The Epson SmartScan software is janky at best, and terrible on M1 Macs as its not fully compatible (shame on Epson for not updating their software for Apple Silicon).
The scanner is built well, except the negative Carrie鈥檚 are flimsy and cheaply made. I accidentally snapped the top of the 35mm negative carrier despite how careful I was.
Where I鈥檝e been increasingly unhappy is that I鈥檓 getting artifacts in my scanned images 鈥 it often looks like a digital smear, and most often I get it in faces. I often have to scan an image multiple times and sometimes I don鈥檛 notice it until I鈥檓 cleaning up the dust in the image in Photoshop. I stopped scanning months ago out of frustration and my thought the artifacts were from the logic board on my Intel 2017 MacBook Pro giving me issues with the GPU.
I started a new project recently and I鈥檝e since tested with another 2019 MacBook Pro and a new M1 Pro MacBook Pro. I also replaced the USB cable. The same graphic issues persist.
I鈥檓 currently scanning hundreds of family photos now on an M1 Pro MBP and I constantly have to reboot because the unit disconnects. I also found recently I could not scan as TIFFs as the image format was corrupted and unreadable by Adobe. Because of the previous errors on my Intel Mac, I not sure if the disconnection is hardware related or just a symptom of poor Apple Silicon compatibility.
Now, I鈥檓 dreading figuring out what servicing it or replacing it entails as it鈥檚 a little over 6 months old.
