These were delivered today. Usually I wait a couple weeks before writing any kind of review but I've spent most of today listening to these speakers with various types of programming.
I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile. I also haven't auditioned scores of different desktop speakers to be able to give a broad comparison of different products.
What I can say with confidence is that the the Edifier 1850DB is an obvious and worthwhile upgrade from the speakers I had on my desk before. My previous setup was an 8" JVC HTIB and two Mirage NanoSats that I had previously used as a 5.1 setup at my old house.
The Nanosats are quality speakers and the JVC sub did the job. However, because these are larger, front ported speakers, the range is much greater. This means that dialogue is rich and everything is more balanced.
I still have the JVC sub going, but I don't notice it as much. I tried unplugging to see how the Edifiers do alone. I know in other reviews some are satisfied with how they sound, but to me, the added sub does a nice job of filling in the bottom end.
The Edifiers are on my desk, about an arms length away. The sub is on the floor, beside my desk. There is no wall behind me, but one of the Edifiers is up against my PC so there's probably some kind of reflection.
Since this morning after delivery, I've listened to various genres of music, several YouTube videos, two video games, a hockey game and now I'm watching the world series. These speakers delivered in every situation. With the music, they filled the room exponentially better than my old setup. With the world series and with hockey, the commentators voice is more natural because there are way better lows. The video game effects came out much clearer, making the games more enjoyable.
I had a bit of buyers remorse at first because I already had speakers on my desk. But after spending the day listening to these speakers, they seem worth every penny.
If I could ask for one improvement, it would be that there is some kind of button to change inputs, or volume dial in the front. This would allow me to quickly mute the sound if someone calls me during my work day. I'm not used to fumbling for the remote or searching for the audio control keys on my keyboard.
Other than that, I'd fully recommend these speakers. Their presence is exemplary compared to what I had before.
