There is No Image Stabilization. This is the basic low end bare bones no guff about it lens. It focuses well enough but as all IS lacking lenses, should be kept safe on a stand, tripod or Platypod. The DC motor is noticable but given the age of this particular model (new regardless the series is old ) it is loud but proud. Keeping you mindful of low light conditions and even your heartbeat, this is excellent for stills, nature or otherwise. You CAN capture movement but I wouldn't call this an enthusiasts pro break out tool.
If you are particularly brave you can slap a 1.4x expander on this modest device and give yourself some added oompf.
I would say that as a gift, it's appreciated and should be used with forethought.
Lacking IS, weather resistance and USM, it is genuinely good for practice and stills.
Make sure you have invested in a nice tripod and take your time. Use a remote app to help you unlock some fun faraway shots.
It isn't a bank breaker, but the savings translates to getting exactly what you paid for.
