Got this on "sale" for $99.99 (CAN) and thought it was a great deal only for it to go on sale even cheaper a day or 2 later while mine was in transit. Oh well. I really like this thing though. Like it so much I gave it to my gf and got myself the D9-1 that went on sale 3 days after I got this one for a much lower price. Oh well again.
The sound is quite punchy when it needs to be and has decent highs due to independent tweeters vs. "full-range" speakers. Stereo imaging isn't very great (as expected) due to the short distance between speaker drivers - but it is there so it's not playing in mono. The stereo pairing feature is a nice option to have if you buy 2.
To get the best sound out of this boombox, you're going to need to learn to use the equalizer on your media player though. I recommend Musicolet for Android (free) for anyone who still keeps local MP3 files. Out of the box, it's tuned pretty flat aside from the bass-boost button.
Speaking of bass, this thing has plenty. It had no trouble handling the mixtapes I recorded in the 90s as a club DJ that I through at it. Highs are nice and crisp again providing that you tune your media player's EQ appropriately.
It also appears to hold quite a charge as I had not yet drained the battery after handing it off to my gf. The device arrived mostly charged (maybe 65%?) and topping it off took just under 2 hours - while playing at a low sound level.
It is also very ruggedly built. It's solid and heavy. Those big chunky end-caps are not letting anything near the passive radiators they are protecting. They are bolted in place firmly so there is no rattling as well. You could probably use it as a makeshift battering ram if you want to siege a castle or something.
Another reviewer mentioned issues with the strap about it not being removable. It is possible to do it if you bend the metal loop apart at the joint. Bend it just enough to slide the strap out then bend it back in place. Consider putting a carabiner clip on either end of the strap so you can clip it on as needed. You shouldn't have to but it can be done.
I won't hold the price issue mentioned at the beginning against it. It holds up to most boomboxes I ever heard in the 1980-90s which retailed for $400 at the time (they of course had cassette and/or cd plus radio). You would not have purchased this speaker for under $100 in 1985 had the technology been there.
