Customer Review

This was my first time using CarPlay, and I wasn鈥檛 sure what to expect鈥攂ut it turned out to be a smooth ride (pun intended). Just to clarify: this review is for the CarPlay screen, not the CarPlay app itself. I tested with an iPhone, not Android鈥攕o if you're Team Android, you'll have to consult your own tech oracle.

Setup? Ridiculously easy. Just plug it in and follow the directions鈥攁 six-year-old could probably do it faster than me. Both CarPlay (for interacting with apps like maps, music, messages, etc.) and AirPlay (which mirrors your phone screen) worked right away. And no, you can't watch movies on CarPlay鈥擜pple is wisely not trying to turn your dashboard into a home theater鈥攂ut AirPlay gives you that option, just don't do this while driving. I think it's actually illegal to make videos viewable in the front seat while driving.

I didn鈥檛 set up the backup camera because my car already has one. That said, I鈥檝e installed backup cameras before, and while it鈥檚 totally doable for non-professionals, threading wires through the trunk and connecting to the reverse light isn鈥檛 exactly a five-minute job. But if you don鈥檛 already have one, it鈥檚 100% worth the effort.

Sound testing was a breeze鈥擝luetooth and FM both sounded great. The built-in speaker, on the other hand, reminded me of a 1960s transistor radio. Not great, but it鈥檚 really just there for testing, so no harm done. I didn't test the aux connector -- I didn't want another cord dangling.

I mounted the screen with the suction cup arm. Despite my dashboard being textured, it stuck just fine, and the adjustable arm made it easy to find a good spot without blocking the view. Considering the screen is pretty big, that was a pleasant surprise.

Only hiccup? I couldn鈥檛 use Siri by voice when the screen was locked鈥攖urns out my work phone has that option disabled. So, not the device鈥檚 fault, just corporate IT being... well, corporate. (Don't tell my employer I said that 鈥 I work in corporate IT.)

It won't drive the car for you, but it makes the ride more enjoyable.
