As an adult builder, I appreciate how well this set exploits the mechanical capabilities of the Technic system. You turn one crank, and a complex mechanism with over 15 gears orchestrates the rotations of the earth and sun, the orbit of the earth around the sun, and of the moon around the earth, all occurring at different rates.

I don't really mind that the end result is a bit clunky; it would have been difficult to make it otherwise. It impresses by how it works, not by how sleek it looks on a shelf. That said, as a geography geek, I would have preferred Lego to pay a bit more attention to the quality of the printing on the earth. One would expect the joint between the two earth hemispheres to be at the equator, and continents to appear whole rather than being sliced by a wedge of ocean along the joint. The lighter blue shallow water around the continents is so dark that it obscures the coastlines, and the size and placement of some of the white icecaps and beige deserts is a bit "creative".

Another reason for giving only four stars is the somewhat limited stability of the build. Even with its rather wide base, one has to hold it with one hand so it doesn't tip over when turning the crank with the other. Also, the white cladding on the main support seems a bit silly; it hides what should be seen. If the sun had been a transparent sphere with a light inside, that would have been totally amazing.
