Hard to decide exactly how to feel about this movie. On the plus side, the action scenes are very good looking, there鈥檚 no other movie out there right now besides maybe Greyhound that really features large warships in their combat environment. It has no real competition I would say in terms of another movie that it can be compared against for this reason, there isn鈥檛 any other war movies that cover these large sea and air born battles in the past 50 years. It鈥檚 CGI heavy and this has major ups and downs as the film goes on. They seem to put all the effects effort into the main battle scenes such as at midway while earlier scenes like the Pearl Harbour attack look substantially less well done. However some of the Midway attack sequences do look really good and is the highlight of the movie for me. The story is also lacklustre in terms of characters and their development, however it uses real people and honestly doesn鈥檛 stray from the historical events. I think this is a great way to show this battle, however these characters could have been dived into deeper to give more of the human aspect, it鈥檚 not that the stories of the real people isn鈥檛 interesting at all, because they very much are and are probably better than most made up stories, but they aren鈥檛 shown here as well as they could be. And finally the film moves along too fast for its run time, it would have benefited from a slightly longer run time given all its trying to cover. Overall enjoyable to watch if you like this history, it鈥檚 truthful and accurate to real events, but feels like it鈥檚 rushing along and has shallow characters, and the CGI hops around from rather good to lacklustre
