  Sharpeners in my elementary school had this design, and like those, this one works well. I expect it's because there are two spiral sharpening elements inside, working on either side of the pencil, making a balanced cut. The metal of the case and the multi-hole disc is thin, but still functional -- so it's probably a well-considered trade-off to keep the price down. The only complaint I had was that the metal tab that selects which pencil size to use didn't provide enough pressure to keep the disc at the selected hole size. I think this is probably a manufacturing defect. However, I was able to increase its pressure adequately by slipping a mm-thick piece of paper between the tab-base and the front of the shavings container. The resulting arrangement works great, hence the 4 stars.
