After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and
him.

Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.

They need an army. They need power. They need
magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.

But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

Let's get one thing clear: Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm are not stand-alone. Onyx Storm is the third of what is to be a five-book series. Each one immerses the reader in the world of Basgiath War College. Sex, battles, magic and opinionated dragons add to the reading pleasure.

I read all three Empyrean services in chronological order, enjoying each one as they contribute to the (many) characters' development and the unfolding multi-layered storyline. I am grateful to Rebecca Yarros for renewing my love for quality fantasy. I found myself seeking stolen moments in the day and quiet time before bed to read all three books.

Despite the prominent fantasy aspects of the books, Yarros's characters are quite relatable with their imperfections, fears, and vulnerabilities. Onyx Storm ends on a cliffhanger, with much to be untangled, especially for our main character, Violet. I look forward to reading Yarros' last two books.

Maybe its just me, but characters just seem to pop up a lot in this book and I'm supposed to know who they are. It's a great story, but hard to follow at times.

    **Spoilers**

Where did the nets comes from? That was so confusing.. weighs the size of desks? What? Alright I guess. How did she not realize Aarics signet? Why wouldn't you read the note from the rune that was brought to you in battle. Killed by a stone? How? What was the reference about the hand print? When did we know that had happened lol. I dunno these books are long, maybe I'm missing stuff but, Panchek? Ok

What a ride Onyx Storm took me in! This book was captivating from start to finish. It was such a big book, but I felt everything was important, well developed and very informative. I was instantly hooked from the first chapter and I don't feel there was any dull moment. This third book in The Empyrean Series is wihout a doubt my new favorite!

As I expected, Onyx Storm was action packed and full of political aspects and revelations that had my jaw dropping multiple times through my read. It was also brimming with romance and spice, but also friendship and loyalty. Regardless of these beautiful lighter moments, there was also sadness, anguish, heartbreak, betrayal, scheming and casualties.

Violet rose as a powerful and brave heroine. The way she tried to leanr and control her power more was spellbinding. She was devoted to a cause bigger than herself, but also so ardent for Xaden and her unshakable love for him. And that man... wow! I already loved him, but he outmatched himself. He was the perfect partner and his one liners full of passion, possessiveness, humor and love had me swooning. His circumstance wasn't easy, but he still fought for his cause.

I was fascinated by the whole cast! Seriously, the squad and the way they work together and support each other was incredible. They're truly the meaning of found family.

How can I wrapup this review without mentionning Tairn and Andarna. Once again, these two were the perfect companions to Violet. Their irresistible personalities had me enthralled. Tairn with his ever present grumpiness and Andarna with her candor and sweetness. The perfect dragon duo!

I tried to savor this book by reading a little slower, but I utlimately finished it quite fast for a book this long. And now, I'm dying for the next book that will release in forever, lol!

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This book was such a ride! (Pun intended, lol).

I will admit, I did not do a reread of Fourth Wing or Iron Flame, and I regret that. If I had, maybe I wouldn't have been so lost in the beginning.

If it's been a while in between each of the books, I'd recommend either a reread of the first two books or look up some key points and characters. Onyx Storm starts right where Iron Flame left off, spitting so much information and characters at you. It's hard to keep track.

Once your brain finally catches up and you start to (kind of) remember names of places, characters, and dragons, the choice to put this book down gets difficult!

You really get to experience more of the world in this book. I love the world building and the history we learn throughout.

I think my favorite thing was definitely the comedy! The dialog really displays the amazingly fun, hilarious sides to each character in this book. Love the sarcasm!

This book had me screaming, crying, laughing out loud, all the emotions! LOVED it!

I can't wait to read the next one in this series! Highly recommend!

    Rating: 5 stars

Tropes: Found Family, Political Intrigue, Forbidden Magic, Found Family, Rebellion, Dragon Riders, Cliff Hanger Ending

Spice Level: 2 - Heavy on the sexual tension, spicy scenes are fewer/far between but detailed & hot

Darkness Level: 3.5 - We are basically in the middle of a war so... death, war violence

    Thoughts:
    SPOILER FREE

Onyx Storm was everything I wanted and more—intense, emotional, and so much going on. This book did not disappoint. It had all the vibes, all the feels, and took me on a wild ride from start to finish.

I cried. I laughed. I raged. I yelled "WTF IS HAPPENING?!" more times than I can count. There were moments I had to physically put the book down just to process what I’d read before diving back in. The emotional highs and lows were intense.

And that last chapter? Absolutely unhinged. I still don’t know how to process it. But one thing is certain—Rebecca Yarros knows exactly how to keep us on edge and desperate for more. I feel like I need to re-read everything but also take a vacation from that ride 🤣

Now, I have ten million new questions and maybe three answers from all the lingering mysteries in Iron Flame. I don’t know how I’m supposed to survive the wait for the next book, but one thing’s for sure: I’ll be thinking about Onyx Storm for a long, long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Onyx Storm: A Fiery, Devastating Triumph in the Empyrean Saga
Reviewed in Spain on March 23, 2025

Rebecca Yarros returns with Onyx Storm, the third installment in the Empyrean Saga, and it’s every bit as explosive, emotional, and heart-pounding as readers hoped it would be. This book builds on the intensity of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, plunging us deeper into the world of Basgiath, the dragon bonds, and the fragile alliances that hold everything together.

    Violet’s Next Trial by Fire

Violet Sorrengail continues to evolve into one of the most compelling fantasy heroines of recent years. In Onyx Storm, she’s tested in every way imaginable—physically, emotionally, and morally. Her growth is painfully raw and incredibly empowering. We see her make impossible choices, question everything she thought she knew, and risk it all for the people she loves.

Her relationships—especially with her dragons and with Xaden—become even more nuanced, and her inner strength continues to shine as she navigates a world that seems set on breaking her.

The War Escalates & Secrets Come Crashing Down

The tension in Onyx Storm is relentless. The conflict expands well beyond Basgiath, and every alliance, every secret, and every betrayal comes to a head. There are shocking revelations, political maneuvering, and unthinkable sacrifices that add layers of complexity to the already intricate world Yarros has built.

The pacing is tight, the action scenes are cinematic, and the emotional moments hit hard. No character is safe, and readers will be on the edge of their seats until the very last page.

Xaden and Violet: Still One of the Best

Let’s be honest—we're all here for the dragons and the slow-burn, high-stakes romance. Violet and Xaden’s relationship in Onyx Storm is fiery, complex, and painfully beautiful. They face new challenges that threaten to tear them apart, but the love between them? It’s the kind that survives storms—and sometimes, causes them.

Their chemistry is as strong as ever, but it’s the emotional vulnerability, the trust, and the heartbreak that make their relationship feel so real. Prepare to scream, swoon, and possibly sob.

    Why You NEED This Book

✔️ Violet’s Continued Evolution – She’s stronger, smarter, and more determined than ever.
✔️ A Romance That Refuses to Die – Xaden and Violet are fiery, messy, and unforgettable.
✔️ Dragons, War, and Devastating Twists – The stakes are sky-high, and the losses are real.
✔️ Emotional Gut Punches – The grief, hope, and courage are beautifully written and deeply felt.
✔️ A Brilliant, Expansive World – The lore grows, the threats intensify, and the ending will leave you gasping.

    Final Thoughts

Onyx Storm is everything a third book in a fantasy saga should be—bolder, darker, and emotionally charged. Rebecca Yarros has crafted an unforgettable continuation of Violet’s journey, filled with fire-breathing stakes, stunning character growth, and a romance that burns through every obstacle.

If you love dragons, enemies-to-lovers tension, morally gray heroes, and fantasy that shreds your heart and stitches it back together, then Onyx Storm is absolutely unmissable.

🔥 Would I recommend this? Without question. It’s powerful, devastating, and absolutely brilliant.

Rebecca Yarros returns with "Onyx Storm," the third installment in her captivating Empyrean series, delivering another action-packed adventure that will keep fans of the series thoroughly engaged.

The novel starts strong, establishing the continuing saga with the compelling characters readers have come to love. While the middle section occasionally meanders with uneven pacing that might test your patience, Yarros makes up for it with an absolutely thrilling final act that transforms into a genuine nail-biter. The climactic sequences are arguably among the most exciting in the entire series, making the occasional slower moments worthwhile.

What truly stands out is Yarros' consistent ability to balance character development with the larger world-building of the Empyrean universe. Even when the plot temporarily loses momentum, the emotional core of the story remains intact.

Despite some pacing issues, "Onyx Storm" remains a fantastic read and a worthy addition to the Empyrean series. Fans will be satisfied with how storylines progress while eagerly anticipating what comes next.

For readers who enjoyed the first two books, this third installment delivers the same blend of excitement, emotional depth, and fantasy elements that have made the series so popular.

This is absolutely, hands down my favourite book in the empyrean series so far. An absolute whirlwind from start to finish but in the best way. This book answered so many questions but then opened created so many opportunities for more questions - I never wanted this book to end.

I am so pleased that Xaden and Violet finally got their ducks in a row and chilled out 😂 I loved seeing their relationship deepen in this one as Violet really came into her own and matured throughout the book. Xaden has firmly reinstated himself on my list of book boyfriends 🙌🏼

It’s the name on everybody’s lips at the moment but I cannot get over Ridoc in this book. What a way to take your character development up a notch! He was the perfect balance of funny and unwaveringly determined and has absolutely shot up in my rankings for favourite character 😮

My absolute favourite thing about this book was how comfortable we’re starting to get with the cast of characters (I think I’ve finally nailed remembering everyone’s signets and dragons 😅) but even more so how we were given so much more insight into how they interact with their dragons. I just loved seeing more of other characters and how their dragons complement their personalities - we're used to seeing Violet/Tairn/Andarna and Xaden/Sgaeyl and their nuances but had never considered how differently others would get along with their own dragons. I absolutely ate it up!

Some incredible and, as always, equally devastating moments in this book that I cannot and have not stopped thinking about since I finished. I could literally go on about this book for days and even a week later I’m still absolutely reeling from that ending!
