- Reviewed in Canada on February 29, 2000The instrumental tunes really kick, and the lyrics Collins comes up with are so cold, you can feel the Hawk comin' across Lake Michigan...
Get this one from Alligator records - it's definitely worth the cost of admission, folks. You'll not find a better Telecaster player than Albert Collins. (I'd heard that his volume knob on his amp went past 10, to 11, but I didn't believe it 'til I saw him live in California - I couldn't verify that it wasn't simply painted on, but it sure did sound like he was blowing that speaker past its limits to the coldest sound I'd ever heard.)
May your music live on through future generations of blues aficionados, Albert.
Peace out.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2004"Frostbite" may not be as well known as Albert Collins' commercial zenith, the 1978 album "Ice Pickin'", but it is nevertheless a fine effort.
Featuring a handful of excellent musicians, "Frostbite" includes some of Collins' best songs, like the supremely funky "If You Love Me Like You Say" and the wonderful piano-driven "The Highway Is Like A Woman", and he is backed by a five-man horn section which plays soulful riffs and fills without ever overwhelming Collins himself.
The excellent drummer Casey Jones is perhaps mixed a little bit too far into the background on a couple of tracks, but the sound and the mixing is generally very good, and the interplay between drummer Jones and bassist Johnny Gayden is top-notch.
As you probably know, the late Albert Collins played with a capo high up on the neck of his Fender Telecaster, delivering his muscular solos with no overdrive and very little sustain, and the resulting clear, "brittle" notes gave him his nickname "the Iceman".
He plays a number of excellent solos here, particularly on "Give Me My Blues" and "Blue Monday Hangover", and his vocals are strong and confident.
Not all of these songs are strong enough to make "Frostbite" a five-star album, but most of what is here is very good or even great, making this a fine addition to anyone's Albert Collins-collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this album!
Verified PurchaseThis is one of my favorite Albert Collins albums because the the song Snowed In. His guitar work on that song is just amazing how he makes his guitar sound just like a car that won't start. That combined with the band makes this just an awesome piece of music. Albert Collins is a blues legend, guitar great and I highly recommend checking his music out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frostbite: Albert Collins - Snowed in with the Iceman
Verified PurchaseThis 1980 release is the 7th studio album from the coolest ice picker of them all, Albert Collins, and his second for Alligator records, THE blues label of the `70s and `80s.
Collins had a totally unique style that served him well throughout his recording career. At the heart of it was his unusually tuned guitar and the way he would pluck at the strings with his thumb and forefinger, eschewing a pick, and creating a sharp, clear, aggressive sound. He put this basic sound at the heart of a series of tracks that combined blues with a strong funky soul element (amplified by the use of horns and bass) and quite often a strong sense of humour.
Collins was a showman first and foremost, always finding new ways to surprise, amaze and entertain the audience. From this comes his desire to show off what he can do with the guitar, and his singing style which has a story telling quality and a sense of humour. This album shows off all these elements, with track after track of great funky blues as he tells stories of his trials and tribulations in life. My particular favourite is the album closer, `Snowed In' in which this guitar genius manages to imitate the sound of the engine slowly turning over and trying to start in an iced up car. Pure genius.
An excellent buy for all those interested in blues. It's different from the usual blues music that you are probably familiar with, but all the better for it.
