3.0 out of 5 stars Not for serious reference
Verified PurchaseThis book has several major weaknesses: no cv of the author, no index, and no serious inquiry on the entries, which appear to be chosen at random. A serious Dickens Encyclopedia could be a work of art. Christina Kassabian Schaefer, author of The Hidden Half of the Family and Genealogical Encyclopedia of the Colonial Americas

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
Verified PurchaseI've found this encyclopedia to be a great reference while reading Dickens' novels, particularly those with complicated character connections, like Martin Chuzzlewit. The alphabetical format makes it easy to find things, the entries are thorough, often quoting canon, and the references are well-done. The photos in the back of the book are a nice addition (though having photos throughout would have been even better). My only complaint would be the quality, which is substandard. The pages are printed on thin, cheap paper, and a larger type with spaces between entries would have been more user-friendly. Despite the quality, though, this is the best hard-copy Dickens lexicon I've come across, and I'm grateful to have it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay Reference
Verified PurchaseThe book is easy to read and it is quite easy to find information. However, I can't seem to find any references with "explanatory notes on obscure allusions." I love Dickens but wish there was an easy to use reference to the language of the time.
