Not powdery / crumbly but should come in a resealable bag

- Reviewed in Canada on July 15, 2025I am trying out the use of LECA clay pebbles in my hydroponic garden as a friend told me this is more likely better for root growth and to prevent root rot.
The clay pebbles in this bag are solid but lightweight and had no odour. I'm impressed that they were not crumbly, and there wasn't too much powder in the bag when I was pouring some pebbles out. However, I am only starting with 1 pot to see how my plant likes the clay pebbles. So after pouring out what I needed, I realized that the bag is not resealable. I had to find a large elastic to close the bag so that if the bag falls, I don't end up with pebbles all over.
The bag is 4.5LB, which is a generous size for the price ($32.99 CAD at time of order).

- Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2025I got this for my houseplants since my previously very small clay balls weren't doing enough to help with the aeration and drainage and I love it!
Firstly, these are very natural pebbles and have the appearance of such as well. I had those orange perfectly circular clay balls before and those blended horribly and were impossible to reuse properly due to their size. These pebbles are very large. The dimensions given are 4mm to 15mm but my bag had around 80% of the pebbles being closer to the 15mm. I'm not sure if it's just my bag that is like this, or if most of the pebbles are like this. However, the balls can be snapped in half or cracked to make smaller so this isn't an issue for me. They're not very dirty so unlike other clay pebbles / balls, they don't really need to be fully washed, but they could go for a rinse at most.
Due to their size, they would be very easy to remove and reuse, so their claims on that seem very legit. I really like that this is LECA clay, and love how they work. They should never decompose and it shouldn't damage your plants roots. It's also next to impossible to overwater your plants with this, as long as you have a drainage hole at the bottom. These are pretty good and are actually very reasonably priced, considering how large the bag is. While the bag is only 4.5lbs, it's honestly pretty huge. I have around 10 plants in pots around 5-10" wide, and I only went through 1/3 of the bag (lined the bottom and some mixed into the dirt). Since it's reusable as well, this is a great deal.
My only real complaint about the product is the bag. I would love to see some sort of resealable aspect added to the bag. Currently, if you cut into it, you just have an open bag and will either need to find another container or hope you don't spill. I like to keep my products in the same bag if possible, so the bag having the ability to close again would be great! Honestly, these are pretty great and I'd recommend them for anyone suffering from drainage problems. Even if your plants aren't the ones suggested, you can put these at the bottom of your pots to help prevent root rot. Plus, supporting a small business is always better!

- Reviewed in Canada on July 18, 2025This soilless potting mix is great stuff. It's a big bag so should last me for awhile. I use it for plants that don't like wet roots as the clay pellets absorb the excess water. I also grow some plants in water in my aero garden and want to try growing them just in these pellets with water. Very happy with the contents and while I don't feel like I have to I will give them a rinse off when I use them which will be today. They are great for supporting your plants_i'm very happy with this product and think that is is pretty good...
- Reviewed in Canada on July 17, 2025This LECA from Hydragarden so similar yet different than the LECA I’ve been using for a year or so now. This definitely differs in colour being quite dark and, of course, darker when wet. But the other thing about this I immediately noticed was the bag seemed lighter in weight. This held out when I did a very brief comparison. Now I’ve no real explanation for this but suspect it must have something to do with the manner in which this particular LECA is made/formed. Seemingly having a rougher outer surface, this means it may be more porous therefore able to hold onto more moisture? Part of me is saying that when used, the plant pot seems heavier than if it had contained the other LECA product. My imagination?
As with any LECA product, this requires a good rinsing (and then rinsing again) to rid it of all of the dust and small particulate that naturally forms with these over time and transit. This process seemed a longer one with more of this debris needing removal. But as this rinsing process for LECA is a longer more tedious one than for most other growing mediums, this wasn’t a totally unexpected thing. So far the 2 pots I have used this in (both a mixed substrate) have tropical plants that are holding steady. I’m still not breathing a sigh of relief as it is too early in for that. But immediate dislike by the plant has been avoided and that is a very good thing! My favourite aspect of this LECA is that it is reusable. This makes it good on the planet, but also great for my pocketbook .
- Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2025I ordered this to make a chunky "soil" mix for repotting my orchids. The bag arrived with no damage, and it was fuller than pictured in ad. There was minimal dust, no odor, product was dry and the pebbles were mostly intact. They are lightweight, but offer more support than bark mix alone. My orchids are outside for the summer and it's quite hot, the clay mixed with other medium allows easy drainage, roots can breath and don't get water logged and they offer stability for my plants. I did soak them in water before use and they did not dissolve or crumble, am hopeful that will last and be able to be reused after sterilizing.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 19, 2025HydraGarden LECA Expanded Clay Pebbles seem more like charcoal than clay with a bit of styrofoam consistency. They stay hard even when soaked and it takes a hammer to break them. They are great for the bottom of pots to prevent root rot. I like working with it better than perlite but I still can't tell if it has the same water retention since it actually floats in water. Still great to have at the bottom of large pots though.
