I received this FlyroadUp Bluetooth OBD2 scanner free from the 鶹 Vine program in exchange for an honest review. I’ve used generic Bluetooth LE adapters and paid apps before, so I knew what to expect.
I have had experience with the typical blue and similar devices in the past and previously used two of the common (at the time) paid apps to work with those.
Test rig & apps used:
- Vehicle 1: Kia Sportage (2018)
- Vehicle 2: Dodge Grand Caravan (2015)
- Phone: Google Pixel 7a (Android 15 - iOS compatibility not evaluated)
- Apps: FlyroadUp official app; tried but couldn’t pair with Torque Pro
Connection:
- First use: Bluetooth pairing failed for ~2 min, then succeeded when I launched the FlyroadUp app first (didn’t pair in android settings).
- Subsequent uses: connects in <5 s from app launch.
Vehicle Diagnostic:
- Functioned well on both vehicles and was quickly able to diagnose the check engine light. All the key sensor readings were there for me.
- The required app is easy to navigate and had all the features I remember having in the paid apps, so I found it extremely easy to use.
- Though I like the app, and am satisfied with it, I wanted to test if I could use the device with Torque Pro, a paid app that I had previously used. It would be nice to have the security of knowing it will be supported long term by a wider app-base.
Form Factor & LEDs:
- LEDs small and hard to see when installed. Most vehicles I’ve used these types of readers in, the OBD2 port faces straight down under the dash.
- I really like the power button, though the placement of my OBD2 port doesn’t allow me to leave it plugged in for any length of time (or really drive with it). Size is where the smaller devices have an advantage.
- The size and side indentations make it easy to install and remove from the OBD2 port though.
Pros:
- Diagnoses and clears check-engine lights
- Displays real-time data with minimal lag
- Reconnects in under 5 seconds
- Power-button makes it easy to remove
Cons:
- LEDs face downward—hard to see in many vehicles
- Bulkier footprint can block footwell space
- No support for third-party apps like Torque Pro
